If you're packing up for the new year (or have recently), please share with the rest of us. I know thenortherner plans to give up from another thread, and I'm already on a whopping 48 hours.

Let us know if you're quitting for the New Year, those that have been previously successful can chip-in with advice and let us know how you're coping. Come and post when you have a craving to distract your fingers.

I'm on the Nicorette Freshfruit 2mg Gum, which after pretty much trying them all, became my nicotine relacement product of choice.

Not for New Year but haven't smoked since September when I started the NicoLite e-cigs.
A lot of people seem to be doing well on the e-ciggies. I've got a friend over from Cyprus for Christmas and she is one of my 'smoking buddies'. To see her puffing away on an e-cig I must admit was a little disappointing, but if she can do it, I must be able to.

Struggling a bit today (day 3 for me), but walked the dog with £0 in my pockets in case I was tempted to stop at a shop. I'm on the nicotine chews, but not had that many today - YET!

I went cold turkey years ago (and lasted 8 years!), but now I have a serious lack of will-power.

For those joining us over new year, good luck and let us know how you get on.

I'll have to admit to having a bit of a 'wobble' today. A few years ago, a few of us locals converted a derelict barn into a 'man-cave'. Whether it's in the gameroom (smoking), in the TV room (smoking) or in my office (smoking) it's a place where we all smoke and always have smoked. I must have lasted about 30 seconds before scavenging for a cigarette. I also had a mate come up this afternoon and, even as a non-smoker, he arrived and chucked a packet of ciggies on the table in the TV room - guess these were his 'subs' for using the facilities.

Not using the place is out of the question, so I need to get my head around it. Having gone 3 days of stress (visiting my mum) and not smoking, I know it's doable, just a mental/association thing I have to overcome.

We can do it together though folks! Share the successes and perhaps even occasional lapses (like mine!)

OK, so I'm hopeless. Smoking like a train today - altho just one ciggie left in the pack and even looking at it makes me feel sick. At home with the rug-rats tonight (and don't smoke at home) so hopefully just one ciggie away from smoke-free. I can do the odd-days here and there pretty easy, have previously gone 8 YEARS (until around 2007) and did 8 months last year.

Might be getting a Lotus Elan +2 as a project which I can throw the money I waste on smoking into.

Feeling pretty laid-back today and not had the urge at all. I'm even sitting at my little desk in the man-cave which is somewhere I've always smoked.

I got given a big tin of Fox's biscuits for Christmas. I took out the biccies and am putting the ££ I would normally spend on smoking into it (well, until I need the money for something else, or it starts looking like a decent amount of cash worth spending)

Good luck to everyone else who gives up.

So we're all smoke-free in 2013? Good job. I know I can give up, just need to stay given up!

Must be others trying it for the new year?

Day 2 nearly accomplished. Not really bothered like I thought, already £16 in my "look what you saved" kitty! Although I've had a couple of nicotine chews, so a bit of a lightweight.

Sense of smell already improved, jesus my kids stink! biggrin

Day 3 here as well, I've also been greeted with the urge to randomly drag someone from their car and give them a beating. Hopefully chilling a bit as the days pass.

Does a cigar count? redcard

A mate just had his first born (on New Years Eve) so a small celebration over a game of pool seemed in order. If it helps, I found it pretty rank and no intention to pick up those nasty stick things again!

Has it only been 4 days? Still pretty chilled, not had cravings but could quite easily pick up a cigarette at any given moment. At Autosport next week and 'popping out for a quick ciggie' is about the only break you get - so will be a new challenge.

Well, its 4 days clear, no temptation yet, so doing well. Stayed away from situations that may be associated with it, havent been in my workshop for a few days, and have been staying inside more.

However, am noticing its affecting my sleeping? Im finding it harder to sleep, and harder to get up each day.

The OH, who has quit for new year too, is having horrific dreams, is this possibly due to withdrawal?
I'm the same, I have a place where I smoke(d), that's the hardest part to deal with. Congrats on the 4 days. I suppose the non-smoking could be something to do with the sleep and OH's dreams. It's an addiction and the body has to adjust - worth giving up tho.

Meanwhile .... Day ONE for me again - slight slip up! Nothing major and didn't smash a whole pack like I did on New Year's Eve, but still gotta be honest with you guys!

Wish me luck, day one here smash

Ok, I'm useless. My old man took my 7 year old to football (well, Fulham), came back to ours for tea (Buckinghamshire) before heading off home to Sussex. Bent their car a mile into the journey (nothing drastic)

Limped back to my place, I took them home, and got home myself about 1am.

Walked my dog down to the 'man-cave' - which is fast becoming my achilles-heel and had a smoke (or 2).

Since new year if you exclude the man-cave I've smoked ZERO - if you include the man-cave I've smoked 10 - I guess still better than the 20+ a day I was smoking before. In fact I can go back to the 27th if we exclude the one place that's catching me out.

There is temptation everywhere (everyone else smokes, ciggies left all over the place), and not using the place is out of the question. I gave up for 8 months last year while on a project based solely in my office at the man-cave, so I know it can be done, but having difficulty getting 100% off them this time round.

Even though I know smoking is crazy expensive, I've been physically putting the money I spend on cigarettes into a tin to emphasise that point.

It seems to be evenings (and in *that* place) that I'm struggling with. Rest of the day I don't even have an urge or craving.

still struggling here, but still smoke-free everywhere apart from my achilles-heel. Don't get cravings or even fancy a cigarette during the day, so must be a 'comfort blanket' kind of thing in the evening. A bit disappointed with myself, but I guess better than 20+ a day. Not sure if Autosport will make or break me.

Finally managing an evening in the man-cave without ciggies. Between me & you guys, the wife was getting royally on my tits tonight, so I left for the cave with a planned detour via the petrol station (and I don't need petrol!). Got about 100 yards and thought "what the f I am doing?" about turn and so far so good. Early night tonight so think it's in the bag!

Had a tough day Wednesday setting up for Autosport with a complete bell-end of a colleague (no excuse I know) and hit the ciggies in the evening to let of steam (or smoke I guess). Smoke-free again today.

If I slip up (and I'm pretty likely to again), I don't think I've failed and hit the ciggies full-time, I just think I'm an idiot and try again!

Day 2, £15 recouped and FREE
Despite a couple of slip-ups, I've been putting aside what I normally spend on smoking into a jar. Of course we all know how expensive smoking is, but £8 soon became 20+ and today is £74. If I can leave the jar a year it could be quite a lump, but I plan to get a car on PCP with the same money (easily £200+).

I AM struggling, not especially with cravings or the desire to beat random strangers anymore, just finding it quite tough. I've never smoked at all when at home (not even garden), am the only smoker at work, have previously given up for 8 years, did 8 months last year, don't drink, so everything is stacked in my favour - I just have to admit to enjoying the damn horrible stuff.

Well done everyone who's stayed off the ciggies, it's not too late to start now, and it helps in a strange way to tell random strangers about it!

I've wobbled a fair bit along the way, but I look at 13 smoke-free days as a positive, rather than dwell on the days I've slipped up. I'm on 5 clean days straight which is a small victory as these include evenings at a place I've struggled to stay off them, but I think finally making progress.

Would have been so easy to grab a pack at the petrol station today, but driving away having not was a better feeling than I remember smoking giving me.

I am seriously eating WAY too much. Not especially at dinner times etc, but picking during the days. Still have a couple of situations that would normally involve smoking to face, but pretty laid back. £120+ in my saved cash jar.

Just discovered the NHS 'Quit Kit' was delivered and was tucked away by the wife in the kitchen. Was pretty disappointing to be honest, and I doubt is the difference between keeping anyone off the ciggies or not.

No wobbles here for over a week, so must be getting easier - altho still hit the nicotine chews when feel like punching the wife.
