I've got a broken (amalgam) filling in the rear most upper molar. The filling is a sizeable one and the dentist states likely to require replacement with crown at some point soon. A white filling may last a bit longer than an amalgam replacement though. However, due to the lack of space and the issue with food build up behind the filling between the poor molar and the wisdom tooth, the dentist has recommended removing the wisdom tooth which will enable better cleaning and obviously easier work on the tooth later on.
The wisdom tooth hasn't caused me any direct issues up to now (ie no pain from that directly although the broken filling hasn't been comfortable!).
I'm not 100% sure about logic of removing a healthy (although of no real use) tooth and keeping a bad one which will still need work done to it.

Thoughts (preferably from dentists!)

Thanks. Off to have it done (although will look at the xray while I'm there) in a couple of hours!

Should really have given update. Was done - no problem (other than the filling in the molar in front of it broke again so had to be repaired) or pain at all. Nice big curve on the tooth itself which made it a bit tougher to get out but was fine in the end.

Thanks for the input.
