Evening All.

Next Saturday (28th) I'm scheduled for a laparoscopic (sp?) operation to repair a bilateral inguinal hernia, ie two hernias, one on each side of the groin.

Having been a gym rat most of my life, and very much so over the last 15 months, I spoke briefly yesterday with my surgeon and was surprised when he told me that I should be fully functional and able to resume my current level of training within a month!! In my mind I was thinking double that, and more! It does put my mind at rest that I shouldn't be out of the gym for too long.

Like most would have done I've googled a few online rehab plans but would be interested in any PH'er PT's and members' experiences and advice.

Not the biggest operation in the world given what some have been through on here recently but I haven't been under the knife since I was a little nipper, so am a tad nervous!

Indeed I intend to. smile Kind of looking forward to the R&R to be honest. Sounds like you were one of the unlucky statistics.

Out of interest was it related to any clotting issue?

Nope not a belly button hernia. As mine was a bilateral inguinal hernia ie one on both sides, and the TAPP method was used, the navel incision is to insert and inflate the cavity with CO2, the other two are to insert various instruments and mesh for repairing both hernias.

I went in to theatre Saturday just after midday and woke up around 2pm. I was surprised how reasonably alert I felt when I came to where as after my last GA, admittedly more than 10 years ago I was in limbo between wanting to go back to sleep and wake up, feeling I could do neither, but yesterday was snacking on a snack box of sandwich, tub of mandarins, OJ, and biccies within an hour or less.

Pain not too bad at the time. They won't release you until you've eaten, drunk, and weed. I told the nurse I thought I wasn't ready to wee, but he told me that was the tightness and discomfort in the groin making me think that. Lo and behold the floodgates opened. smile

No bruising anywhere. Just general discomfort and mild pain when trying to stand up from a seated position, getting out of bed is also a challenge! Generally the whole area feels tight up till now. That'll probably last a few more days.

They gave me several days worth of Co-Dydramol (Codeine and Paracetamol) which I've been taking every 4hrs religiously. I also haven't had a poo since the operation, which is to be expected so as well as the painkillers they gave me a bottle of lactulose laxative which will supposedly loosen things up over the initial 2-3 days. Not particularly looking forward to that episode! smile

Luckily no sneezes yet (fingers crossed), although I have always had a persistent cough, worse in Spring/Summer which luckily I've managed to suppress reasonably well so far.

I'll (cliche) take it day by day but thinking a minimum of 2 months before I return to my usual level of training, which is heavily biased to cardio and intervals. I don't lift per se, but do light to medium dumbell and kettle bell work amongst other stuff.
