Freakin laser beams ... anyone had their eyes done?

So I am impressively blind in both eyes, luckily the same prescription in both eyes (-8.5)
I wear contacts virtually all day long, glasses are awful for me, they give me eye ache (yes they are correct prescription) and I can't see properly out of them, everything looks curved, and if I have to look above/below or to the side I literally cannot see anything.
So laser beams... more specifically Optical Express. I have had consultation many many years ago, eyes not changed since, prices have come down which is good. As I have such a strong prescription I needed the best treatment (obviously - up selling I imagine!?!?)
Now my dad and little brother have had it done, they say best thing ever, but I can't get my head around the whole procedure and how horrific it is.
Anyone else done it? is it really worth it?
I am sat here, and due to hayfever I have had to take one contact out. My glasses are at home, so i am squinting at the screen at work. God knows what the others in the office think of me!!!!

Well went for consultation at Optical Express in York. Very nice people. Went through everything. Highlighting the side effects. Potential issues etc.
The price they plucked out of the air for me was £5k. This is die to my very bad prescription. (-8.5) in both eyes. They said they'd have to use the better lasers to help night vision. Although stressed it'll never be perfect.
They also said the likelihood is I may need to go back within 3 months to have a second blast, as people with my prescription or worse is difficult to get Bob on first time. Always a worry!!!
I hinted I wasn't happy with price. Nothing was offered yet. He's ringing me back Monday. So I imagine I'll be offered a small discount.
If not I may as well train it down to London and go to Focus Clinics. They have 100% results. Seem a more professional outfit, and their top level (which I will require) is £5.6k. But it'll involve more traveling for me living up north.
May Google Moorfields as well actually.

Moorfields was excellent to talk to on the phone. The problem I have with them is how far from them I am!! I would require to go down at least 3 times. likely to be 4, I would have to be going down on a train at £250 a pop, plus hotels etc.
Interestingly, after discussing this with Moorfields, they said they use the same machines as Optical express and Focus clinics (also London) If I didn't live so far from London I think I would have gone to them.
Optical Express have come down in price, not that the price was ever a worry, but nice to get a bit reduced. So I am booked in to meet the surgeon today, have a huge list of questions. Optical Express have sent me all the details of the actual surgeon so I can research him etc, which is a positive.
My surgery is preliminary booked for the 24th of September, if all goes well today and I get a good vibe and trust the surgeon I am fairly sure I will commit.
I stupidly googled what could go wrong! bad idea! there are websites set up to bad mouth optical express, optimax etc etc, terrifying! I am now so scared I will come out blind. Everyone however I have personally spoke with who has had the surgery (including father and brother) rave about their only regret is not doing it sooner. Yes they had dry eye for a few months after, but now they can see!!!
So I will keep you all informed, but keep the reassurance coming, I need it!!!

So had a meeting with my consultant, asked so many questions!
They are still happy with my eyes, they are thick enough still. He did stress that the risks are increased due to my high prescription and my vision may never be as good as with glasses, he showed me a worst case scenario and I could hardly tell the difference! He estimated at 15% chance that it won't be as good as glasses/contacts.
Interestingly he wore glasses; I did ask why he hadn't had it done. He said that in his work he cannot take the risk that it won't be 100% perfect (due to being an optician) as his job would be at risk and he was to old to retrain in something else - seemed plausible.
He was a nice guy and felt the safest and most relaxed around him as I have so far - got to be a good sign.
So surgery is booked for the 24th still. I am so nervous. I need to stop reading all the s
