I'm not being funny, but all this slagging off of managers is interesting. Everyone starts somewhere. I believe the Gooners were saying , "Who?" when Arsene showed up.

This is all true, but BIG NAME mangers have fallen flat on MANY occasions. (See Chelsea Thread)

The line-ups used by teams in the Carling Cup this season compared to the league line-ups is at odds with this statement it would appear. It's unfortunate and I don't like it at all, but this bloody 4th place desperation is ruining domestic competitions.

Absolutely. Then there's a chance that 3 of the 4 entrants from England would be 'Champions' of at least something!
Once again, this season the Champions League will not be one by the 'Champions'.

It's certainly a good question, but things were very different back then. A lack of CL football hurts anyone outside the Top 4 (usually ) so much, that even if the fans have the patience, it's difficult for the club to be as accommodating.

This is the critical point though, isn't it?
How long does he get? New manager, steep learning curve. Suppose Liverpool are out of the top half mid-season? I'd see that as perfectly reasonable. 'Rome wasn't built etc...'
I hope he gets time. Liverpool need to hold their nerve if that happens, because I think he's a good man for the job and a MUCH better prospect than Martinez.
