For me, Rooney has the next 45 minutes to save his international career. If we lose, that is it and we can use someone else for the final group game.

As someone else said, Suarez had a knee op a month ago and he looks fitter than Rooney. It's all about desire.

And do you think the result would be different?

I find it hard to blame Roy in all this, he picked the best we had but no one seems to be able to get the best out of them.
Roy pandered to the ego of one player and changed the system from Italy. He deserves blame for that.
yes

Well at least Roy Hodgson now knows the answer to the question he was asked earlier in the week. Is Suarez world class?

In hindsight, bit of a daft answer to say anything other than "Yes" really. The last two or three years, Suarez has been one of the top five players in the world (Bale, Ronaldo, Messi and Yaya being the other four). I'd have put him consistently in the top three over that period but for Roy to say he wasn't sure? Foolish words.

Currently being bought through

Under Mini Soccer 7s, 5 a side on a tiny pitch - non competive
Mini Soccer 8s 9, 10 years 7 a side small pitch non competitive
10,11 years 9 a side 3/4 pitch with offside rule.
12 years - full size

FA guidance to Coaches at youth games is small-sided games giving as many touches to each player as possible. Try not to always play players in their favourite positions.

Unfortunately, football is a physical sport, big strong quick kids will always stand out. There are moves to mix up the ages ranges now so that kids born in August 05 instaesd of playing with kids born betwen August 05 and July 06, may also get a chance to play with kids the the year above. So bigger kids play with bigger kids, as they do in rugby.

However, I run a youth team and the general standard of managers/coaches I see is poor. Still little men/failed footballers living out their dreams.

Yeah this is the same rules as us. You right you can't rule out the big and strong. But I feel the emphasis is too far on competition and not enough on skills. We work hard on skills, so it is frustrating when ref's won't blow for pushing.

Yep, another "coach" here. I run two under-14's teams in Bristol and I was one of those who passed his Level One badge three years ago.

But I'm no more a football coach than an astronaut. I did the course because I had to; to run a football team, one of the parents had to be a qualified coach. I did it to retain some control but then got in somebody who is a much better coach than me to coach the kids. He'll do his Level One shortly but my strengths are in football adminsitration. If pushed, I could do a half decent job at coaching the under-14's but this country needs hundreds of new coaches that are better than that.

So now that our exit has been confirmed, who do we think should start the Costa Rica game?

I'll suggest....

Hart
Jones Cahill Jagielka Shaw
Henderson Wilshere
Sterling Barkley Lallana
Sturridge

Not convinced about Jones but Johnson, apart from his assist, has shown nothing to suggest he is the answer to the right back quandary. If I had to pick my next 23 man Euro squad now (and players will come in and out of form, of course) but for the first qualifier, I'd go for...

GK: Hart, Butland, McCarthy

DEF: Caulker, Baines, Shaw, Stones, Cahill, Flanagan, Jones, Clyne

MID: Wilshere, Oxlade-Chamberlain, Barkley, Henderson, Sterling, Lallana, Townsend, Morrison

FOR: Sturridge, Rodriguez, Walcott, Lambert

To be honest, I'm not convinced on four of them (Jones, Lambert, Rodriguez and Morrison) but if push came to shove, I think I would pick that squad for a qualifier in September. A few others that would be close include Ince, Chalobah, Redmond and Forster.

If he quits he will lose his big pay off. I'd be surprised if he does.

Quite frankly who wants the job? It's a poisoned chalice! Too much expectation and too little talent to call upon. And then there's the national press...

The only upside is the big pay off when the inevitable failure occurs.
I doubt he needs the money, GG, and whatever people think of him as a football manager, he seems to be a decent honourable man. Maybe in his mid sixties, he really doesn't want another two years of this and will quit.

Oh, I certainly agree that he's a decent chap. Ironically and unfortunately that's probably a handicap in his current post, but another few million in the bank from the pay off is not to be sniffed at...
If he does resign, he'll be a little gutted that most of the upper mid table clubs (Saints, West Brom, Man United and Spurs) have all appointed new bosses recently. I don't think there's any PL vacancies at the minute.

Luke Shaw and Ross Barkley set to start in final game against Costa Rica, Gerrard rested, Lampard to take over as the Captain, probably his last ever game for England.
I'm confused (genuinely)

I assume this is an opinion on who should play. You mean Gerrard to retire and Lampard to become new Captain in time
You don't know something we don't know as I thought Gerrard had said he wouldn't make any quick decisions. Though I think the next game will be Gerrards last.
I think he means this is what the media believe will happen; it's being widely reported this morning that some players who haven't yet started will get a run out. Lampard as captain will be a one-off gesture as he will announce his retirement from international football once he gets home.

Just seen Jimmy Anderson's tears at the end of the cricket match. He'd held out with Mooen Ali for nearly an hour and a half but was caught out on the penultimate ball, meaning England lost the Test and the series.

It was obvious he felt terrible and at the post match interview, he cried. Wish some of our footballers would show that sort of emotion instead of coming out with the usual "We know we've let everyone down blah blah; hope we get the opportunity to put it right blah blah..."

As a football manager would you prefer your player to hide it or play 75% and not put in a performance ? me , I would prefer to be told so I could then play someone who felt 100%

Nothing to do with it being the pinnacle of someones career or not - if he didn't feel 100% fit , irrespective of age surely he has done the right thing to tell the manager?
Spot on, Si. I follow quite a lot of pro footballers on Twitter and the vast majority of the ones I respect have backed Sterling. The odd one has disagreed as is their right but most say that he's got good reason to be tired (last season, World Cup then a bigger role at LFC this season) and could be rested. Just our media trying to spark stuff off again.

What a load of old twaddle,

You don't see Messi, Bale, Ronaldo & the other world greats cry off over a bit of tiredness.

Representing your country must be the ultimate achievement for any sportsman not making sure you are ready for QPR at home at the weekend ,no disrespect for QPR intended.

Edited by Black can man on Monday 13th October 19:55
Well, given that one result of being tired is a severe reduction in ability, I think I'm surprised half the Spurs team aren't snoozing on the pitch.

Showing severe signs of tiredness down there too it seems.

biggrin
hehe

I know I'm bloody tired of watching them. Responsibilities elsewhere mean I only get to see home games nowadays and we've won one home game since March. Reckon the manager is on a sticky wicket despite three promotions and an FA Trophy in his seven years with the club.

I can see why he doesn't blood youngsters at tournaments; very few managers have the guts to do that. But at 3-1 up against a poor Slovenia side, would it really have ruined anything to let Saido Berahino have twenty minutes at the end? Give the lad a real taste of international football, probably would have helped his development a little.

Instead, he throws on Milner (who I'm an admirer of but 99% of the time is a defensive substitution).... it's got to the stage where I can't be bothered to watch England games for ninety minutes any more.

One plus point has been the display of Nathaniel Clyne at right back. Hopefully it will mean the end of Glen Johnson's England career.
