Outback/Legacy?

I have a 64 plate Golf TDi, 150PS with the DSG box. Use it to do about 50 miles a day commute, it does nothing wrong.
Contemplating a change that won't cost me too much and I keep finding myself looking at something Japanese and have always had a hankering for a Subaru.
Just looking at current used models on their website and similar age Outbacks and Legacy's seem to be vaguely sensible money.
Anyone know anything about the diesels and the auto's? Before people beat me for asking about the auto I go up and down mainly dual carriageways and stop/start traffic and having had a couple of auto's now I'm not sure I can be arsed with a manual for the odd blast out.
