I've seen reference to the letter in a number of books and on a couple of documentaries as well. I wonder what the message is?
I interpreted it as 'This is the family of astronaut Charlie Duke from planet Earth who landed on the moon on April 20, 1972.'

I'm not sure that either Scott or Mallory ever went to the Moon, did they?
Point is - they went to equally extreme environments for their times, but weren't so lucky.
