Can anyone tell me what this is called in the picture? I thinks its something to do with the air intake. I have a weird noise coming from this location when in neutral, goes when the clutch is in. Thought it was the gearbox on its way out until it got a lot louder and caused me to investigate. However its not the gearbox but a racket coming from in this box. it sound like a really old fan whirring when in neutral and now during transit more so when cold.

Just wondering if anyone can tell me what that specific box is called. Also will probably open it up myself and see whats what. Just don't want to take it apart and have the car fall a part. Any insight as to what the whirring noise maybe also welcome. Like i said it sounds like some sort of fan, Could be some sort of air leak as well i suppose. Will have to check it out.

Whats the correct name of that black box (marked with a yellow X) in the picture?

Will be scrapping it if its anything to do with the gearbox. Defo sounds like its coming from in that box however if the gearbox is under also possible then. Have to take it apart and have look into it. Will have a month to find another car if it is the gearbox.

Gut feeling was something to do with the transmission however me and friend agreed that it actually sounded like it was coming from in that box.

Have made some videos. Can anyone advise what it could be. Cant get the car in the shop till thursday next week, so may as well get some opinions in the meantime. Gut tells me its something to do with the transmission, however both me and a friend are near certain the noise is coming from the air intake system.

1 neutral cold start

2 in transit

3 neutral acceleration only

4 stationary bonet open in neutral

So what you guys reckon it could be?

Some other info I have zero problems with a slipping clutch or grinding gears. Neither of these things occur. Just this racket.
Noise occurs going forward and reverse. More prevalent at slow speeds 30mph or less.

To me ths sounds like an old dirty fan or a type of belt rubbing on something, that's what the sound reminds me of.

is that the big ass expensive repair where the transmission needs to be taken out and split in two?

If so may sell it as spares repair cut my losses and get something else. I could afford to get it fixed but my luck is after getting it fixed exactly 12 months and one day after the repair it would reoccur.

Car is a 02 Honda civic S 1.4, has 74000 miles on the clock. Due an mot as well possibly some tyres and the Big ass transmission repair and maybe other stuff for the mot, cars probably worth a grand at a stretch. Not really worth fixing i think, shame love the car.

What do you reckon i could get for this just selling as spares repair? The cambelt and water pump job was done a year ago not that it matters if the transmission is waiting to explode.

would £500 be to much of an ask?

Yeh its a shame really. I would consider replacing the box but with other things that also need to be done its not really worth it. Brings the bill close to what its worth. There a crap tonne of civics around for sale atm round where I am. I love Hondas but this issue is definitely making me think of getting a different brand now.

Its around a 6 hour job to remove the gearbox split in two and replace bearing and seal refit gearbox, but unfortunately that box sounds like it may be to far gone to save with just the one bearing. To remove the box and fit a s/hand unit is 4- 4.5 hours the only problem being unless you can hear the replacement box running in the donor vehicle you may be buying another box with the same problem, Ive replaced the bearing in four in the last year or so its very common, really about the only common problem with the Civic.
What else about the noise make you thinks its completely stuffed, other than bearings?

Got a friend who can help me drop the transmission. Could then just drop it off at a garage and get them to do the work couple of hours labour and put it back in myself. Save a small fortune. Sounds like a plan.

Do you reckon more in the box could have gone then as well as the bearings? No point bothering if the damage is worth that what i initially thought.
