Hi All,

I hit the kerb which crack the alloy and bent it inwards, since then i have replaced the Rim, Wishbone and hub which resolved the rim from being inwards.

But the steering wheel is still bent, sitting at 2 o clock when driving straight and the wheel has a larger gap at the front looks like something has been pushed backwards after the hit as shown below image:

Can anyone think what other part needs replacing? to fix the steering issue: could the suspension have gone bent?

Ok, so no point replacing the suspension leg yet? or Shoker?

Because theres a guy breaking a Type R and he said he can fit the leg today?

What you reckon.

It was a bent subframe, noticed this after putting it on the ramp, got it replaced yesterday its not pulling to any side now, steering wheel is straight.

Lucky was not the steering-rack.

I think the wheel might still be a few mill to the left, but will that be an issue?

Not causing any vibration or anything

Going to do 2-wheel alignment today.

No point spending any more money on parts until you've had a full alignment check done.
Also measure front wheel centre to rear wheel centre on both sides of the car. There should be no difference between the sides. If it's less on the side that was hit & you've replaced the wishbone - was that bent BTW? - then there may be damage to the wishbone mounting points, the suspension leg or the suspension leg mounting points on the shell.
The wishbone wasn't bent.

Can the guys doing the alignment check the front wheel centre to rear wheel centre on both sides of the car?

After subframe replacement its 90% better just a few mill diff now, can i leave it or will it cause uneven wear?

  • Bump.
After 600yards straight it then still bears to the right.

Now have replaced:
1. Subframe
2. Suspension Leg
3. Wishbone
4. Hub
5. Alloy

But over rough roads and when braking sometimes it goes towards the right and feels loose a bit when doing so i.e. for that little bit it goes to the right very easiy.

What else can it be now?

The subframe has been replaced allready.

I dont know if it has mounts or not, we took it out and put a new one in and it fitted so cant be mounts otherwise it wouldn't have gone in so easily only the corner of the frame was creased.

I have dont the Geometry and it has come back with:

Front Setback is 9mm:

Does any one have a clue.

just because you can tighten up the bolts doesn't mean it's fitted correctly.

It will have mounts (this is what holds it to the car) but you need to set them correctly.

The subframe is not just a bolt off/bolt on part, it requires aligning, with the greatest of respect, you or whoever is doing the work for you clearly doesn't know what they are doing.

You need to get someone who knows what they are doing to remove, align and re-fit the subframe, then check the subframe geometry against the car body shell, this needs to be done BEFORE you even think about refitting suspension, wheels etc and doing wheel alignment checks.

just because the bolts fit into the mounts DOES NOT MEAN it is fitted, if the bolts went into the holes "easily" then they are almost certainly floating mounts so as above, you need to get someone who knows what they are doing to fit the subframe properly.

I assd them chume you have also replaced the wishbones and suspension arms or haecked?

Basically you need to get help from a professional, what they will charge to fix it will be less than trying to do it yourself, this may not be what you want to hear, but I cannot emphasise enough how safety critical the work you are doing is, and how important it is that it is done correctly, given what you are saying, this clearly hasn't been the case so far!
I have replaced the wishbones and suspension arms.

Ok. do you suggest to fit some rigid collars in to support the subframe alignment from the likes of Tegiwa? as will tighten up and loose ends etc..? and then if still bent will be something else?

yeah obviously at an ep3 specialist garage (i.e. grinspeed) but what I'm saying is:
If we do that and then it is still bent? Then what? Thats my question?

Or u suggesting to sell the car?

A good four wheel alignment with an operator that knows their stuff will give you the answers you are looking for. That said you have been told this already. We see people throwing parts at cars willy nilly and spending loads more than if they had brought the car if for a proper check. A few mm if misalignment of a subframe can make a big difference to alignment angles and driving pleasure. I remember when the Ford Mundanio came out and the subframe alignment was wrong from Ford, when brakes where applied the car would pull right.
I went to Aline they couldn't tell me which part is for 100%, but i'll try the rigid collars if it doesn't fix it after that i'm gonna sell the car and buy an ep3 premier edition.

I was going to race a mk7 gti dsg box (key for key / pink slips) in two weeks i need it to be 100% for that.

I know I shouldn't carry on banging my head against a brick wall banghead but...

Why do you think rigid collars will help you align the subframe? this is usually done with some kind of measuring equipment!

as for the racing for pink slips/key for key, well I suppose thats one way of getting rid of a crash damaged, poorly repaired car.... rolleyes
The people who are going to fit it have the measuring equipment - i'm not doing myself. (if it fixes it does if not i'll sell it)

i'll only race if it repaired as could take bends previously at 110 but now feels dodgy at 80.

you don't need to bang your head or get emotional about any repair jobs its only a 1500quid car. (buy another one worst case)
