First off, excellent forum, about time there was a proper PH Trucking/haulage forum! Be great to have somewhere to post pics and stuff more often rather than waiting for an appropriate thread to appear on General Gassing etc smile

Feel its time to start a thread to properly celebrate the large, wide and heavy end of the road haulage spectrum!
I've been a keen haulage and truck enthusiast for a very long time (Lorryspotting and suchlike sites have a lot to answer for lol!) and i enjoy snapping interesting trucks and loads from a nearby bridge that crosses the A1 in Eaton Socon, Cambs. See lots of very interesting stuff, but the absolute highlight has to be the abnormal loads! Hard to not to feel like a 10yr old once again when a fully lit up lowloader looms into view carrying a beastly cargo, be it the more regular heavy plant machinery (360 diggers, face shovels and bulldozers) to the more unusual and super sized loads under a full convoy!...

Heres a few pics of some of the best trucks and loads i've encountered thus far. Would be great to hear and see more from the PH trucking contingent too smile -

In particular hauliers such as HC Wilson, Hutchinsons, SA Smith and Chris Bennett all look superbly turned out with their FH16s and V8 Scannies etc. Always a pleasure to see and snap them on their way to and from jobs!

The ^ snap is one of several yachts that get hauled up the section of the A1 i regularly watch, always an awesome site, but this one was by far the biggest load of any kind i've yet seen!! -

Pure beast! Abbey Haulage DAF XF105.510 on lugging duties. Was touch and go wether they'd lower it enough to fit under the bridge properly, but they got there in the end! epic sight in every way!

More of my snaps here smile - http://s1203.photobucket.com/albums/bb394/Forthrig...

Cheers!

Is that the mighty ALE Unipower ^ ? I'd love to see that in action!

Have seen a few units with the push/pull mounting points on the front and back, but haven't seen a cradled load like the above as of yet. Allelys take on similar moves too IIRC

Heres another i meant to post earlier, All the way from Omagh, Donnell & Ellis' beastly Scania R730 V8 8x4! -

snapped this in a layby on the A428 a few weeks ago! Was a proper surprise to see it to say the least!! The load was a huge self propelled crane. An immense rig in every way!

Eight wheel tractor unit with a 700+bhp V8? Thats a bad-boy, isnt it? biggrin
Just a bit lol! biggrin

I've seen a few R730s on the road, but that was by far the beastliest!

very good pics mate.
like the abbey boat ones, used to see them on the road alot when we were doing spain regular a few years ago.
really like the daf, pulling the cabin, never seen that on my travels.
Cheers smile

Yeah Abbey come up and down here fairly regularly, usually once a month, with a yacht loaded up, but that one ^ was the biggest i've ever seen!

The DAF was part of a small group of trucks from the same firm lugging parts of cabins that day. Saw ans snapped an FH500 6x2 and nice old 164G Scannie as well!

Liking the FH from Sweden ^ too. Looks a fair old yoke! (FH16? looks like an 8x4 too!) Nice one!

I always fancied one of those to build an insulated tipper on. Unfortunately they never seem to have lower roofed cabs and theyre not really an ideal dual purpose vehicle either. Still 730bhp and 32 tonnes biggrin
That sounds good, something similar to this? -

Parkys 730, the first new one i saw and snapped! Beast.

They're meant to be very smooth and tractable to drive apparently. IIRC the 730 comes with Scanias Opticruise box as standard which must be handy at low speeds with a heavy load on.

FMC, does R T Keedwell do some heavy haulage? I ask as on the M42 the other night I saw a lovely dark red with spray art Scania tractor with a heavy load on. I didn't think they did and I base that on having done business with them.
I know Keedwells do 44t flatbeds and Brick and Block work, but i'm not sure about full on heavy haulage. Sounds an interesting rig you saw though, their livery is usually pale blue/cream! Heres a few smile -

I do quite like a Keedwell, very smart units!

Not quite - more like this:

A slightly deeper body would have been required due to the shorter chassis length, but itd still have been as steady as a rock. Can you imagine how relaxing t would be to drive though, with almost double the 380bhp usually found in an eight wheeler?
Ah right i see now smile

That would be a super machine indeed, would look awesome! i guess its not impossible though. I remember a story in Trucking mag just recently about a drain jetting company who had one of those huge Kaiser Whale water recycler tank thingies mounted onto an R620 chassis (Worked better with the manual gearbox for that application apparently) The operator said that they worked with their local dealer and Scania to build the ideal truck to spec! *think* that truck had a day cab on it too.

It's the only livery I know for Keedwells too. I must be mistaken but as I drove by I was sure it had Keedwells on it.
Could have been a flagship truck for their fleet perhaps, bit like Stobarts "Debby" maybe (Shes an FH16 700 that pulls a charity reefer co sponsored by WH Malcolm if you haven't seen it)

Not exactly heavy haulage though is it?

Would love to know the story behind this.

That T Cab is still more than welcome though! Proper beast! Looks great too cool

Thats a HC Wilson unit being loaded up with the giant yacht ^ Great looking fleet, Based in Elmswell, Suffolk IIRC.
I see quite a few Wilsons, they haul oversized farm machinery and proper heavy plant mainly. Their trucks carry unusual titles such as "European Voyager" and "Continental Crusader" etc.

A quick bump!

Had the pleasure of these 3 Collett Heavy Transport MAN units (Including a fairly rare F2000 Roadhaus in the middle of the convoy) heading south on the A1 yesterday en route to a local wind farm site with 3 new turbine blades a piece! -

Perhaps not *quite* as large as the previous one i saw passing through here a little while ago if i'm nitpicking, but another fairly sizeable Fairline yacht wended its way past along the A1 early on Monday afternoon! -

The BiB put in a rolling block a little further up the road so the load could pass under the bridge unhindered (Theres always seems to be some knob in a white van who tries to cut 'em up!...)
Coming direct from the Fairline factory in Oundle. I've just seen someone else picked a few shots off of this rig up passing along a residential road in central Cambridge again! yikes

Nice! Hard to top the Heavylift boys TBH! cool

Great vids. They do run some very interesting prime movers do ALE it must be said! You've got their unique (In this country anyway to the best of my knowledge!) Vienna built OAF 8x4 running ballasted along with their two Faun beasts in the first vid there. Looks like a fair old lump of metal on the cradle there! yikes

They move big components from various power stations to on and off shore locations so i assume thats what the load is a part of!

Nice to see their ex army Unipower in the second one there, thats one truck i'd really love to see on the move, pure beast! biggrin

Well, as it happens.

I work for them.
Or should I say did. Quit this month for new pastures.

That stuff is mere hand luggage for the area / scopes I look after.
We have a 45,000Te skid / move next year.

smile
Aah! nice one! biggrin

Christ, that skid move sounds epic! Must need some serious kit to handle something like that i bet!... yikes
