Caravans: What's the Point?

After sitting behind long lines of caravans on the A69 heading to the lakes today, I wondered if anybody on here can explain their appeal? Surely if you have enough money to buy, store and maintain a caravan to use a few times a year, you can pay for a few weekends in one of those big static luxury ones, or even buy a camper van which has more than one use.

I'm not even flaming caravans, I just genuinely don't understand what their point is.
