I cannot recommend this book too highly; huge- 850 pages - but utterly dazzling prose. I have read few , if any books , which better enable the reader to visualise the subject matter. The descriptions (of anything - New York , Vegas, Amsterdam , the interior of a flat , a murder , a gesture) are extraordinary and the plot just keeps on giving.
