After watching the HBO series Rome I fancy reading a book(s) on the Roman Empire. Would like to read about the wars with Carthage, the Emperors and the decline of the Empire.

Any recommendations? Thanks

Colleen MucCullough's Master's of Rome series is an amazing account of Rome from about 100Bc through until the death of Mark Anthony. It can be heavy going at times, but she pretty much sticks to the true history.

The first book is The First Man in Rome:

One of my favourite reading experiences.
Thanks for that. Have downloaded it on Kindle and will see how I get on.
