The new Corvette and Mustang have both decent performance and decent handling.

The criticisms of the past are becoming less valid now, although the cart spring suspension remains an issue.

Still, it is hard to argue against the fact that they go well and are good value.

So why are'nt they more popular?

Personally, I think it is more likely that I will chew my own arm off or be the father of Cameron Diaz's love child before I buy a Corvette.

Why do I feel this way? I don't really know. Guess its the styling and the image, or something. I have driven a recent Corvette when on holiday, and it was alright. But for some reason I cannot figure out why I would never buy one.

In any event, they remain very rare and pretty unpopular in the UK. And I don't think that this will change.

Why are so many of us prejuduced against these cars? It is deserved or not?

Because they aren't available here, yes you can get one imported, but it's an arseache and apart from Vette's 'Stangs and Vipers, would you notice if they were all canned by their relative makers?

You can't waltz down to a Cheverolet dealer in Maidenhead and perchase whatever tickles your fancy, mainly because there isn't a dealership.

In the past you would be able to buy a Chevvy or a Cadillac in this country. They have tried. But we rejected them, and so they stopped trying.

The main reason why American cars do not sell is simple. They just are'nt very good.

I think that few people dispute that cars like the hot Corvette have got plenty of performance. I am not surpirsed that they are as fast as they are.

But I don't think that is the point. I still would'nt dream of buying one, and I know that a large portion of Brits feel the same.

Is it the style and image? I don't know, but I can say with certainty that they have no appeal at all to many people.

I don't mind driving LHD cars...

Don't see what the problem is. You can adapt.

As the originator of this thread, and having said that I would probably chew my arm off than buy a Corvette or such like, I do wish to make a correction.

There are some American cars I have a soft spot for. But they are 30 years old or more...

Cars like the 60's Mustang, or maybe an authentic Shelby Mustang. I could definitely live with one of those.

On a hot summer day like today, with speed cameras everywhere and a congested south east of England, one of these would be most agreeable..
