Oh dear.

I've hear remote controlled boats down the lake that sound more powerful. Those Citroen Saxos the kids drive around the town sound more tasty than these. What a load of rubbish!

But rather than the usual PH rant thread where people argue about whether the new cars sound good or not, how about a thread of insulting metaphor for what these new F1 cars sound like?

What is rather ironic is that these things are supposed to be encouraging everyone to think of the environment.

Meanwhile Bernie Ecclestone is doing deals for new F1 venues every year which involve new circuits being built all over the globe. The creation of a ton of concrete involves generating a ton of CO2. Think about that.

They still sound like hedge trimmers to me.

I had a few more thoughts on what that whining buzzing sound I was hearing during qualifying was on Saturday (alas was enjoying the sun too much yesterday to bother with the race)

a) Could that whining straining noise be the sound of Bernie Ecclestone's money counting machine spooling more £50 notes into his awful daughter's trust funds?

b) Could it be the straining wheezing noise of the Oxygen machine they use these days to keep Bernie alive?

c) Or maybe it's the sound of the document shredder working overtime in Bernie's offices as he approaches his next lawsuit.

Hmmm... so many ideas. I wish I actually knew the answer...

I know that there are some road cars now which sound so st that the makers have taken to putting fake engine noise machines in them so you can bear to drive them. I think this is done on a number of BMWs and the new Renault Clio RS has it too.

So let's develop that technology. Calling all F1 teams - develop technology that makes your st sounding cars all sound like BRM V16s from 500yds away. Now that would be some actual progress...

It occurred to me that possibly one of the only sounds which could be worse than the noise emitted by the F1 cars in Melbourne was the sound of a few million F1 enthusiasts weeping at what they were hearing.

I started to wonder if Nissan had started to build F1 engines because at Melbourne I am sure I heard the unmistakeable roar of 24 Nissan Notes being ragged around the circuit.

I'm sure Santa Pod will have a bumper year this year with F1 fans going up there to hear some REAL RACING ENGINES biggrin

Oh what's this here:

Ecclestone admits engines louder than he thought

Bernie thinks it's alright in person, so it must be ok then!

/yeahright
I don't know why he's saying that. He's usually on his private jet home 20 minutes after the races start.

Bernie wasn't at Melbourne, he was at Sepang though and said they didn't sound as bad as he'd been led to believe via his TV.

What part of the contract was breached? Remember Walker is the promoter of an unpopular race which the tax payers don't want to pay for.
I seem to remember Walker complaining that they had made the "product" almost impossible for him to promote because the noise was integral to the experience.

But then Walker slept on it, remembered that only last year Ecclestone (who is supposed to be his mate) was openly making noises about cancelling the Melbourne round anyway (in favour of a floodlight night race around the streets of Sydney) and he shut up about it.

A couple of weekends ago I sat on the grass at Donington in the sun watching - and listening - to an entire grid of historic Masaratis being raced. Absolute bliss for any motorsport enthusiast.

I really do hope they find a quick way to fix the noise pronlem in F1 because at the moment the sound like a pack of Flymos going round. I really cannot understand why they sound like this, because I clearly remember the original era of Turbocharged F1 cars and they didn't sound like Flymos! they sounded pretty good.

So it is with resigned despair that I read yesterday that one of the teams was fitting what I can only refer to as a mechanical vuvuzela to the back of thier car to make the noise better. frown I was going to say the problem was down to a lack of cylinders but it's not as modern GT racers like the BMW and R35 don't sound at all bad.

Surely this can't be beyond the abilities of those concerned to fix. To my mind it's a really important part of the racing experience and especially if you're paying big money to visit the race. Perhaps they could just fit them with Masarati 250F engines...

<SNIP>Does F1 really need to fit bloody cones on the exhaust just to make them noisier!
Apparently they do. All in the interests of improving the entertainment, although I suspect Marx-brothers levels of comedy was not what they had in mind.

All we need now is a driver called Dick Dasterdly to chase the pidgeon.
