Prefer the original colour schemes, not as fussy with all the sponsors decals all over them.

Not for me. Some of the more restrained liveries of the classics are far superior IMO.

There's a fairly recent blog site where someone has produced quite a number of classic liveries on a modern car. They look great. You'll probably find your favourite liveries on the period car is your favourite on the modern car. Williams c1992/3 for me.

Although I still prefer the originals it just goes to show how pretty those old cars are as they still look fantastic all sticker end up!

I am sure it has been done for interests sake rather than 'this is how they would have looked better'.

It is interesting, but not good.
