conclusion:

the 2014 cars sound better in reality than they do on TV which is make no more than a flat drone, but a very poor relation in comparison to what came before. An F1 car at full chat used to be something to marvel at. GP2 cars sound significantly better now. It doesn't have to be louder but they need to find a way to make a better noise.

There's something fundamentally wrong that GP2 cars sound better these days.

The answer will probably be to make GP2 cars sound worse!

Why read topics that annoy you?

Why open topics that are superfluous?

I didn't come here to read the content. I came here to point out that the thread is unnecessary due to the fact that the debate has been well and truly discussed (to death, actually) in a number of other threads.

If you need assistance to find the other threads, here are some handy links -

Because I don't spend my life on Pistonheads and I didn't see any of those topics, nor could I find any looking through many pages in the F1 Forum.

I also filmed this clip recently which compares F1 cars of different eras at the same place, on the same day, through the same microphone. I haven't yet seen another direct comparison on film. I'm sure you have loads of clips you can offer links to.

If there's somewhere else you'd rather be I suggest you (along with anyone else who objects to topics being discussed again) go there. It really is that simple surely?

Some valid points timblob from a live spectator point of view. I can remember when F1 first went Turbo in the late 70's, early 80's and how much quieter they were and that you didn't need earphones any more. As a kid at the time I definitely preferred it, plus Turbos were sci-fi technology back then. I suppose it's quite likely that 10 year olds feel the same now about the new cars.

However, hearing the old cars was a reminder of how much the sound added to the whole experience of seeing an F1 car scream past for the first time. It was also great that there used to be a variety of sounds. In the early 90's we had V10 Renaults, V12 Ferraris and V8 Fords. I'd love to see the rules allow for more variation but I'm certain that the need to keep a lid on costs will prevent that. I'm all for innovation in F1, I think the regulations should do more to encourage it. I also accept the reality of manufacturers wanting to use F1 to showcase new, more relevant road car tech. Take that away and you lose Mercedes, Renault and Honda would ditch the comeback plans. But I'm still not comfortable that GP2 cars sound better. Maybe that was also the case when F1 went Turbo in the 80s?
