Putzing around on YouTube listening to videos of Ferrari V12s and I come across this:

Ferrari V12 from their 1995 F1 machine. That is absolutely glorious. Its a rich, multifaceted sound and as it comes toward you, you do feel like something almighty is bearing down in you.

OP you are right. I don't think I have ever moaned about the current F1 noise but there is certainly a visceral element missing from the spectator's experience.
Hearing those old ones echo around the streets of Monaco or scream under a pedestrian bridge you happen to be walking over is an experience I hope has not gone. They gave you goose bumps.
Doesn't even have to be old ones. I stood next to a recent 2.4 v8 when it was fired up and it was pretty awesome... sort of echoes through your body.
I honestly thought the V8's weren't particularly tuneful. Loud yes, but in a way that became grating. The 10's are piercing but the 12's are where its at, loud, but not harsh....much more operatic.
