Interesting.

Could it be the long awaited arrival of Audi ?

maybe not.

ART ? http://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/art-would-consid...

Either way this will be Honda or Renault powered... maybe a new engine manufacturer. Merc are at capacity and Ferrari will be with Haas coming on board next year.

ETA: Further thoughts...

Is this because Haas have bailed and the FIA are trying to fill the slot ?

If, whoever applies, is ready to go for next year they must have infrastructure/something resembling a team already in place - aside from the actual team one would assume sponsorship deals, tyre / engine contract etc.

Ted Kravitz noted that Gerhard Berger has been hanging around at more or less every GP this year. "Whats he up to?" he asked Jackie Stewart.

Are Red Bull really getting an Audi engine and this is a Renault works entry ? didn't they say something about coming back recently ?

FIA have said if they don't like the look of the applicants they won't grant anyone an entry.

Megaflow's comment is (I believe) more aimed at the logistics of getting a car to the grid, given that the entry won't be granted until September. There are plenty of companies who see value in F1.

Also, rumours circulating that Renault either have already bought or are just about to complete purchase of Lotus. Allegedly they want to put Bob Bell back in charge. Also, Lopez hasn't been seen at any races this year other than Bercelona, where talks are said to have taken place about the sale.

Thing is if ART bought Manor, they'd already have an entry. This is all about a new team, like Haas coming in.

I'm not up on the exact rules, but for example lets say Prodrive came in could they do a technology share with (say) Manor ? Obviously their chassis would need to differ but could they work together on Aero research/testing, vehicle dynamics etc, drivetrain etc ?

I only use those names as Dave Richards was seen in the Manor garage earlier this year.

The only other way it'll happen is if someone has a race team, car fabrication sponsor deals etc all set up... I should imagine any of the WEC teams could get a car together in time, especially if they already know (on the quiet) that they have the entry and this whole thing is a charade just to make it look "fair". This would mean they could be putting the car together now.

Most likely though, is that if an entry is accepted they'll join the grid in 2017.

If Renault buy Lotus I would expect they'd keep the Lotus name and Merc engines for this season and then start next year with the new name. They could even wait until the winter to buy/annunce the change? Meantime they can make their management changes/hires etc.

You can have a chassis made by whoever you like, indeed Haas's plan for a 2015 entry was to have Dallara build them a chassis but they shelved that idea and wanted until 2016.

The successful applicant can delay until 2017 if they wish.

Alternatively this process could just be a charade and the FIA have already (unofficially) given someone the nod.

Quite possible there are break clauses in the contract, probably with a penalty - just an expense of taking the team over.

Ultimately if its going to happen what are Merc going to do? force another manufacturer to run their engine ? not going to happen. Possible they can pick up supply to the new team If it appears) anyway.

Gaz. said:
I'm certain it isn't a buy-out as the FIA are requesting applicants for new teams.
This is correct, any buy out of Lotus (or any other team) is in addition to a new team.

The press release does say that if the FIA don't like the look of the applicants they won't grant an entry to any of them.

I believe spankster was looking for weak teams that'd be easy to mold/bolster his "side" against the power broker teams in those turbulent times; prodrive were one of several more feasible proposals that lost out to the bunch of losers mosely decided on.
Agreed, I always saw Spanky as a frustrated politician - couldn't go that way due to family history and thus played out his megalomaniac inklings within the FIA. I can quite imagine him happy to accept a team or two if he could rely on their support.

Mind you, at least he had a bit of presence and even turned up from time to time, Todt is totally anonymous since he got the job. I wonder who, if anyone will oppose him in 2017.

Bob Bell has gone to Manor as a consultant:

Along with Luca Furbatto (head of design) from STR and Gianluca Pisanello as chief engineer (ex Caterham & Toyota).

Sounds like positive moves for the team.

If Renault are buying Lotus and want him to run Enstone either he doesn't know or is biding his time ?

Forza Rossa already got granted an entry before Caterham went bust, it may have even been before Fernandes sold the team.

They just never showed up or in fact, showed anything - they were just a name on a piece of paper.

I read somewhere they forfeited the entry by not paying the entry fees when they should have, but I don't know how true that is.
