Abu Dhabi via Dubai

All a bit last minute(ish) but my Dad and I are going to look at going out to Abu Dhabi for the GP; we'd like to make a decent trip of it rather than just go for a long weekend given the distance, so looking at some time in Dubai also. Initial plan Dubai for 4 days, down to Abu Dhabi for 3, back to Dubai for a bit then back home.

Apart from transit I've not spent any time in Dubai - Dubai to Abu Dhabi looks easy to do on the map - is it? Anyone got recommendations as to how to do it (bus/train/car?).

Also any tips for things to do in both locations; dad and I are car nuts and my sister is coming along but more for the Dubai shopping experience.
