Just had a nostalgic yearning for rooting round on a teetering pile of old Cortina's and whatever else, wading round in a mud/multigrade.antifreeze mix up to my shins with a huge greasy werewold/Alsation chained up but making it clear it would eat you given a chance.

Do Scrappies still exist ? do you remember them fondly ?

I remeber my dad taking me as a kid to keep his Mk1 Capri going, got my first Thin Lizzy Tape from a Mk2 Capri, found about 25p as well, quite a haul for an 8 year old.

Nice to know they are out there, I remember many happy Saturday mornings in the seventies and early eighties rooting around at Race Brothers in Northenden (nr Manchester) as a kid, long gone now but I wonder how they clear a site like that as it must be fairly contaminated after years of that.

Just found a photo of the one we used to go to.

Judging by google streetview, part of it is still there, no piles of cars though.

I think the writers and creatives on Ghostbusters had a Scrapyard experience as this is eerily similar to the one that used to live on a scrappy at Trafford Park,

It was about 50 percent bigger than any other Alsation and had a coat that was basically dripping with engine oil, made the mistake of entering on a Sunday to have a mooch and see if they had a MK1 Capri in, they didnt but the dog was loose, luckily he couldnt climb cars.

Wow, someone else who remember's Race's smile Many happy childhood memories from there, clambering around teetering piles of cars, usually after a Mini starter motor or brake slave cylinder. Can't believe that we were allowed to do it. Looking back it was damn dangerous, the pools of sludgy oil, water and anti-freeze. Oily shoes and car bonnets are very slippery, especially after some rain. Happy days!

Anyone know of any similar remaining old school yards around the Stockport / Manchester area?
Race's is still there, 7A Boat Ln, M22 4HR but a quick look shows no massive piles of bangers, all looks quite neat really.

Dont think what we remember still exists, the cars have to be drained and I think stripped, then the shells crushed so no more piles and oily mud. We remember it fondly but remember that Saturday afternoon, its pissing down, the light fading, the yard closing in fifteen minutes and you still haven't managed to remove that leaf string, both the Greasy Wolf/Alsation and the cycloptic, 18 stone, 6 foot 5, 12 year old in Rigger boots are circling wanting to get you out.

Nice to see some old school ones still exist, that health and safety hasnt got them all.

We need progress and really they were pretty dangerous places with horrendous ecological impact but its nice for some to keep going, Banger Racing is another last bastion of a health and safety free world, where men are men, who think nothing of welding without a mask, fag in mouth underneath whiats left of a Nissan Primera swinging from a hiab, brings a tear to my eye, and probably theirs a few hours later.

What Thin Lizzy album was it btw? tongue out
Did we get an answer to that?

The one nearest my brother won't let him in. Said 'We've not got any of those, you're not coming in'.
It was a tape with Thin Lizzy written on it, I will go and have a root in the loft.

Luckily my 350Z was blessed with a Tape player, I can match the tracks to a studio album !
