I've been driving a Nissan Primera for the last couple of years, has been great but has a few faults. My Dad has the same car and has just bought a new car, so I now have two old Nissan Primeras, both cars are P11-114 from 2001, 2 litre SE spec cars. My Dad's also has a few different faults, so I'm using mine to fix my Dad's and then I need to get rid of mine for as much money as possible.

I realise that my car isn't worth very much, but I've never had to dispose of a car before, so I'm not sure what my options are exactly.

If I rang a scrap yard and asked them to collect will they pay me for the car?

Is it likely to be worth my while trying to sell parts on eBay, on forums etc to other Primera owners first? I should probably strip off as many sensors and spares as I can in case I have problems with my Dad's car in the future.

Any advice on how to maximise my income from the sale of my car greatly appreciated as I'm out of work at the moment.

Thanks!

scrap it.

they were dull and s**t when they were new
Dull maybe, but very under-rated.
Sure there are lots of faster cars out there, but as a car that will swallow all my bikes it's pretty decent. When you factor in both price and reliability they're hard to beat. Mine is decently quick and the handling is pretty much as good as it gets in that class.

My Dad's is the estate version, so an extra six inches of dull-ness tacked on the end. Awesome!

Does it have an MOT and is reliable? I need a car for a charity rally and can part with some reddies for it if it runs?
It's MOT'd until the end of February/Early march. It's very reliable, I've had no issues with it. It will need a replacement MAF sensor to run though as that's going on my Dad's car. Other issues:

Exhaust has started to blow a bit.
Brake discs aren't far off needing replacement.
Battery doesn't hold it's charge for more than a week.
Engine light is on - caused by diagnosing the MAF fault on my Dad's - needs to be reset.
Fuel warning light is permanently on, but the gauge works.
Rear right ABS sensor needs to be replaced.
No parcel shelf - left it in the Peak District one evening.

As you do.
I used it a lot to go mountain biking, it was dark when I got back and I forgot to put it back in. I very rarely have the back seats up, so I haven't missed it. If I was selling it I'm sure it would be an issue for some people though.

I could do with some thoughts on the likelihood of making a few quid, or best methods for selling parts before I decide whether it's worth my while starting to dismantle it or not?

Take it to a proper scrappy yourself if you're going to scrap it, you'll get a fair bit more than if they pick it up and you'll be sure to get a certificate of destruction there and then (important!)
Is it not worth my while stripping some parts as spares in case I have issues with my Dad's car first? Things like engine sensors etc I'm thinking. In which case it would need to be collected. Any idea what sort of price for collected vs taken in?

I went through a period of severe bangernomics and more often than not ended up with a non-runner after a few months. I always put them on a well known auction site with an honest description and no reserve and was always reasonably pleasantly surprised at the return.
I don't know what a 2001 Primera is worth in scrap value but I don't think I ever got less than £250 for a lot older cars that didn't work.

Not for everyone and I realise I've probably been lucky but it's an option none the less!
Cheers it's an option, though they tend to go for £3-500 working on eBay. Where abouts are you based? I'm in Cumbria so don't have a large population within collecting distance which may count against me.

Thing is this:

Is the same car but looks in better condition and is unlikely to have all the little niggles mine has and is pretty cheap. I'm almost tempted to bid on this one at that price:

That's why I was thinking my best option might be to shift as many parts as I can at £10-£20 a pop, then get it collected by a scrappy. Was hoping someone that had done similar would be able to advise on the best way to do that, or whether it is worth my while.

Someone already suggested that, though I can do that with the one I'm keeping.

I've obviously missed a legendary thread along the way.

Another vote for http://www.cartakeback.com/ just sold my dads old saxo to them and got £145 and they picked it up! Takes 10 seconds to do an online qoute all you need is the reg number and your postcode
I ran the quote on there, £140 if I take it to Dumfries, or £90 collected. But for example my Dad bought a second hand wing mirror on eBay for his when a tree attacked him for £25. Can't help thinking I can make more money that way, but I wouldn't want to end up being stuck having to pay for it to be removed.

Dumfries from Manchester?? Bit extreme. Breaking it is ok of you have time and space. My sister also had a Clio that was wirth about 47p and stuck it on gumtree and sold it in an hour for £130. Someone will buy it
I'm in Cumbria now, not much closer was coming up and that was the best price.
