Another what car thread…..most people apologise for starting a new one but I’m pretty certain everyone loves them, I know I do and they have been giving me some inspiration recently. And I realise I only have 1 post but while I do not contribute I enjoy the daily lurk so please don’t see me as a newbie :-)

So anyway, the requirements…
- I currently have a Fiesta Turbo up for sale so once that’s sold I will be on the market….it’s advertised at £3500 so no higher than that
- Ideally 30mpg + for daily use. I had a 330ci which I was spending £60 quid a week on fuel in and I would prefer not to go back to that (although the Fiesta isn’t far off). Please note that most of the cars below are likely to be below this but I don’t recall making one sensible decision with a vehicle recently. Your experience with mpg on suggestions would be a great help
- I can’t afford big repair bills due to being young and debt-full
- It’s a bonus if it can tow because I am hoping to get a standup jetski (so nothing too big/heavy) but this is not a necessity as I have a mate who can tow
- That’s about it I think but no doubt I will shoot some options down for a reason I haven’t mentioned

Cars I have looked at:

Audi S3 210bhp – only downside I can think of is as far as I can find, mpg is usually below 30. After a little research I don’t think I should let 120k miles put me off

Audi TT- pretty much same as above

Honda Civic Type R EP3 – mpg again and the fact I’m not sure I would be happy with it as a commuter in the long run, but having said that I’m managing with the FRST. Also it can’t tow

Renault Clio 182 – can’t tow with this one either but are a nice car for the money

Saab 9-3 2.0T HOT Aero coupe – the other half is particularly fussy over looks and gave a straight no to this one, however great car for the money it seems. Maybe hard to sell on though

MG ZT – same as above

Mazda MX5 – practicality is limited and I only really love them when they have some nice wheels (think 15x8 et0) and lowered. The problem with that is it’s a commuter and I don’t tend to keep my cars too long and this would probably be a waste of money.

BMW E39- probably a diesel for this one but am I going to run into some hefty costs? Definitely a long time lover of these but never seem to be the right car for me

I was really just hoping for some advice on the above or for someone to come along with that 1 special suggestion I haven’t thought of and for me to think ‘YES! That’s the one’. The latter may be hard as I tend to sit and browse down every model under every make trying to think what I could get.

I should probably say that the ideal car for me is a cheap, small engine run around but as I can’t bring myself to do it, I shall continue to look at the sportier versions of most cars.

Suggestion please…………..

I had a mk4 golf gt tdi 150 remapped by motorsport developments . I shouldn’t have sold that in hindsight but owned it a year and fancied a change, plus it was on 165k still on the standard turbo and the clutch was on its way out. I used to spend around £30 a week on fuel driving it however I felt like. Got the BM, realised how much juice it drank so drove around most of the time quite sedately. Also cut down driving at weekends and it still doubled the fuel bill. I’m only on £1100pm so a quarter of my wage on fuel plus high insurance at the time, it just didn’t feel worth it.

Funnily enough though, I bought an Aprilia RS125 which I immediately regretted (see above about not making the most sensible decisions). That is now

sat on my drive and I cba with a bike now.

By big bills, I mean along the lines of BMW diesel potential bills which I believe can be £1000+. But I may never run into these if I bought one. It’s just a risk you take I suppose.

The jetski isn’t too much of an issue for money. A few mates have them and I am aware of the 2 stroke reliability of the old Kawasaki’s. Trying to keep that a separate issue from the car though.

1991 Ford Fiesta RS Turbo… www.pistonheads.com/sales/4010726.htm

I think maybe forget the towing aspect of it as a mate can tow it anyway, it was just incase any suggestions of capable cars come about.

With regards to affordability its not so much of a problem now as I have paid my insurance in full for the year. Paying for a car with low 20's MPG, its not that I can't, its can I get something that's better than that but is still quite quick and fun

I have looked at the fiesta ST but think I'd prefer a CTR or even 182 for the money

Thanks for the advice.

What sort of price do you think it should sell at then? I'm not in any rush to sell and its a very clean example so I don't feel its far off. Prices are never set in stone so somekne can always make an offer of what they think is reasonable.

I have also amended my advert so there is no mention of CD player. At the end of the day I only paid £100 a few years ago now so it can go with the car.

Your right about the ERST being more sought after, but they can fetch £5k+ for decent S2's.

Like you say, it's hard to put a price on a car when there are only a handful of cars for sale and they can all be massively different in condition. I can't really tell how clean that other white one is from those particular pictures whereas you can clearly see the underside of mine and how good it is.

I may consider dropping it slightly to try and arouse more interest. I will ask a mate of mine to see what he thinks as he is very well known in the Ford scene having built a time attack Focus and owns an RS500, but perhaps he's no good with values, I'll find out.

There should be a link to the build thread on PassionFord from the advert, but having just checked it appears to be missing. This details most of the work that has been done and I have print out f it on 50 sides of A4. This is along with a folder of receipts for the car and many mot certificates...thinking about it I might be able to work out a rough mileage of the car so thanks for making me think about that.

It seems such a hard car to value but I think 2k seems a little low, but as I said earlier I may reconsider the price
