Nissan Micra - cant unlock stereo, anyone able to help?

My wife has low mileage 1999 Micra but the stereo's in lock mode.
I have radio code in handbook but cant enter it - Radio displays "WAIT" on screen when I switch it on then after about a minute displays "SECURE". Have followed instructions in Nissan handbook to the letter. Its standard-issue Nissan radio cassette model B BP6345.
Have already googled for solution to problem, am trying to avoid going to main-dealers.
Any info would be very much appreciated. Thx.

Thanks for reply Mr. Happy, have no reason to believe the radio isn't original but will see what I can do.
I realise I might have to bin existing radio although theres probably some long-winded procedure for getting it out only to have to throw it away in the bin and replace it with a similar one.
Why would anyone want to steal the cassette-tape-player from a Nissan Micra in the first place, security and paranoia gone mad. But thanks again.
