What have I done? (Impulse shed buying content)
Discussion
So... last month I bought a Passat V5 as I needed a car asap, got a little sick of the lack of power and lack of mpg, I felt if the car was doing mid 20's mpg I might as well buy something with a bit more oomph.
I do love the 5 cylinder noise, and I do miss the shove of a turbo'd car.
So, ebay today... what's this? A Rica mapped 850 T5 with 15 minutes to go... Kept refreshing and refreshing... stuck a max bid in and won the bugger for the sum of £590.
So I've gone and bought a tuned Volvo estate, in orange, for not a lot of coin. Am I in for a massive world of financial pain and ruin, or some 5 pot turbo winter bangernomics fun?
I've never bought a car unseen and on ebay... I've just insured it (surprisingly cheaply) and I go and pick it up tomorrow.
Some confidence inspiring Volvo T5 related would stories would help my nerves! Anyone?

from experience I would never buy a car from that part of the world again, mainly due to the cold weather- large amounts of salt on the roads and the consequential huge amounts of rust underneath.
I have bought two cars from that area and both were rust ridden and failed MOT's next time round. Hopefully being a volvo and being designed in Sweden that might not be such an issue
I live in the north east of england mate, about 200 metres from the north sea... if it's going to rot away it'll happen here, but I've owned a Mk3 Golf, where rust came from the factory!I have bought two cars from that area and both were rust ridden and failed MOT's next time round. Well bangernomics has let me down today...
Got the car - for less than £590 - due to a little error on the sellers behalf, but he was a top bloke and we came to a good agreement. Car was bar one thing (the amount of tax) exactly as described and the seller was big into cars so obviously talked the usual stuff when chatting to a fellow petrolhead.
So the car? Well it's a little rough around the edges, but it's a cheap and nearly 20 year old Volvo, it's to be expected. Gave it a little boosty boosty on the the sliproad up onto the M80 after collection and it was a tad hesitant. No problem I thought, it seems like it had been stood a while so I thought nothing some plugs and leads couldn't solve.
Problem got bigger. Started hearing a noise very much akin to a boost leak (high pitched squeal) but it seemed to boost okay if that makes sense. Gave it a bit of stick on the road into Redcar, about 2 miles from home, aaaaaaannd no boost. Feck. No smoke, no drama, no noise and no boost.
Took it to a mates unit to try and diagnose but with very little joy... the lower intercooler hose looks a little crusty but nothing obviously wrong, damaged or leaking. We were tired and none of us know this engine at all so it definitely needs and experienced eye on it. Worst case scenario seems to be the turbo going pop, think it may have took a few blades off the impellor, a used TD04 is about £80-100 + fitting.
If there are any people good with Volvos in the North East area who wouldn't mind casting their eye over it for some beer money, I'd love to hear from you!!

This was mine for a while, and I did all sorts with it over 2011.
So yes the crash, the 'Ring, the stickerbombing, being a support vehicle for my season in the British Drift Championship, and even it featuring in a national advertising campaign were all in my time!
Sure it'll be just fine. I spent thousands on running it, and did my usual of having everything fixed that ever seemed even slightly wrong. It will have its flaws, but its still a great car I'm sure. It doesn't look like its done much since I owned it to be either. Well it can't have, as it still has the same front tyres on!
I just updated the Retro Rides thread there with an end to the story, so everyone feel free to have a nosey, and join up there too!

And I want the wing back if you're going to normalise it!

Drop me an email and I can see about getting the wing back to you once I get the one I have bought painted and on the car

I had managed to burst a couple of boost hoses on the car when I had it, both replaced with new OE ones.
The intercooler and turbo were two parts that were never touched though....
It did have a full pressurised boost leak check twice, and everything was always sorted. Although even worst case scenario on these boost wise is never going to be pricey at least!
This is kind of weird, I feel like I've just sold a car, yet I have no bulging wallet of readies..... lol
Any questions, fire away..... but I'm sure you'll have fun with it. I sure did!
I'll PM you about the wing too
The lower intercooler pipe looks a little crusty, that may be the first job. Or I find a Volvo specialist local and spend a few £££ getting a definitive answer. Are daft boost pipes on these cheap then? The intercooler and turbo were two parts that were never touched though....

With the mileage it has and it's certainly been used as a T5 should, I wouldn't be too aggrieved if the turbo has gone, it's still a cheap car.
Sorry to bump the thread again but the problem has been found. The turbo seems to have expired... there's a little play in the shaft but when it moves it catches the housing and sticks.
Second problem is we have a bit of a rattle that is possibly big end bearings.
Now the car ended up costing me a bit less than £590 due to an error in ad over the tax, so I'm thinking get a 2nd hand engine and turbo, which it seems I can pick up for less than £300 from a quick scour of ebay, sell off ancillaries I don't need to make some money back, stick a timing belt on the engine while it's out and I could still have a nice T5 for less than a grand? I can do the engine swap between friends for a few beers that's not a problem!
Or whack a turbo on and see low long the bottom end lasts?
One thing is for sure I'm not breaking it for spares! This car still has many miles left in it, even if the engine is feeling a little worn out! Or maybe I'm just completely stupid and the 5 cylinder turbo bug and dreams of mid 90's touring cars are going to my head...

Shame the turbo went, but that was probably the original one, and don't last forever! They're not expensive either.
I'd get a good 19T on it and see how the engine actually is instead of just guessing that its knackered....
Exactly, that's what I thought, 170k miles on the original turbo which i guess had some stick in it's life is no big deal to break now. I've had friends with VAG diesels that go through turbos every few months!I'd get a good 19T on it and see how the engine actually is instead of just guessing that its knackered....
I agree with the engine, it's just a little tappy. Maybe fresh oil and filter will fix that. No big deal, I've had worse
Will upgrading to the 19T be fine with the Rica map that's on it? Or will it need further tuning? It's the turbo off the S70/V70R if I am thinking right?
