Pure Driving Experiences: Crickhowell

The second of Dunlop Tyres' sponsored videos takes in a very familiar stretch of Welsh tarmac

Dunlop Tyres is keen to promote the idea of what it calls Pure Driving Experiences and has sent Steve Sutcliffe to the roadtesters' playground that is the B4560 out of Llangynidr and towards Crickhowell in South Wales. Now, Steve's giving away some trade secrets here because if it all looks rather familiar that's because it's starred as the backdrop upon which many a black line has been painted by the tyres of some press car or other in the hands of an eager young hack.

Harris lives not far away and you'll probably recognise it from some of his videos, 'that' hairpin a rite of passage for any aspiring roadtester. But it's more than one corner and the undulating, open and beautifully well-sighted road has all the ingredients needed to shake down both car and driver.

Over to Steve to tell us more.

Watch the video here.

On my map the B4560 out of Llangynidr doesn't head towards Crickhowell - is that a mistake?
In reality, it goes from Llangynidr towards the A465.

I love the praise for the meg, 265 is next up for me.

Anyone notice in the vid that was the basic version, no cup chassis so softer springs/dampers and no LSD yet he still praises the amount of traction!
I believe the non-cup is the only version that comes with Dunlops wink

(The cup comes with Michelin PS2s and the 19s come with Bridgestones. I can't find anything to say what tyres come on the non-cup, but from memory they're Dunlops.)

My 265, cup chassis with 19s came with Continental Contisportcontact 5P's
Sorry, let me correct myself. If you get the pin-striped wheels they come with the Bridgestones. (As per the Trophy)

Slightly OT but what life are you getting out of your tyres?
Depends on the driving really.

Without any trackdays, I get about 8k per set of fronts (Then I move the back onto the front and wear those out). I'm using Goodyear F1 Assy2s now as I prefer them, the standard PS2s should last a little longer. I think that's pretty decent for a hot hatch to be honest. I did no better with my Fiesta ST before.

On trackdays you can easily take off 2mm in a day so they'll wear very quickly. I had to buy 4 new PS2's after 6.5k including 3 trackdays (though from memory, 2 of those were wet! - so your mileage may vary!).
