Oh what joy - The feckwits at DVLA have come up trumps this time round

I have just registered a previously CatC/D car so had to apply for a new V5 in my name,

I aquired the vehicle on the 15/9/2013 & applied for the V5 the same day. (see problems below for why you can't always declare SORN for a newly aquired car when applying for the V5 as you should do

The V5 arrives on the 1/10/2013 in my name

I want to SORN the car...... or at least declare it SORN for the previous month in my ownership

Problem No1 The Post office no longer stocks the SORN declaration forms,

Problem No2 You can't SORN online a car you don't have the current V5 for

Problem No3 You can't declare SORN via the website for "A Period" from when you first receive the V5 according to DVLA

Problem No4 You can't declare SORN over the phone as its based on the automated website system above

Problem No5 You can't declare SORN manually over the phone

Problem No6 If you printer won't print you can't post off the form manually

Problem No7 If you phone up the DVLA & ask for the form, it takes 10 days to arrive before you can post off the form

Problem No8 The local DVLA offices are now effing closed!!!!! (In fact if they were open DVLA says I still can't SORN a car there!!!)

The only option I do know where I can get round the overlap, is to register the car in my name but "in trade" since when I aquired it, as this bypasses the SORN requirements. Obviously I can tax the car this month but there will still be a gap.

Awesome DVLA, you really know how to make things difficult don't you!!!!!!

AIUI, a SORN declaration is automatically backdated to the 1st of the current month - it's not possible to backdate it beyond that.
Thats what I thought, hence "trying" to do it when I applied for the V5 on the one day I had off but failed

Why is number 2 an issue, you said you have the V5 in your name ?
you say you have it so sorn it online ?
Try it - You can't "for a period of time from newly registered" this according to the chap I spoke to at DVLA was because of overlaps in the system. He could not tell me when it would from either!

And I quote from the SORN declaration site after trying it

The feckwit DVLA SYSTEM said:
Unable to use service
Unfortunately, because of the tax class of the vehicle or recent changes to the vehicle record, you are currently unable to apply for a tax disc or declare SORN using this service.
You will need to apply for the tax disc or declare SORN at a licence-issuing Post Office® or DVLA Local Office (as applicable for the vehicle) using the reminder (Vehicle Licence Application/SORN Declaration) or the Registration Document/Certificate together with the Insurance Certificate or Cover Note, MOT Test Certificate/GVT Test Certificate (if applicable) and fee.
