We started it of course, before anyone else made it popular.
Our roads were, and still are mostly rubbish outside of the motorway network.
No wonder the SUV or soft roader is on the increase. Forget tidy handling, hello forgiving ride and a degree of comfort & practicality. In todays environment, especially in the vastly over crowded south east, why wouldn't you have a SUV? There are many haters, but apart from when I am on my bike I am never happier on the road unless in a jacked up estate car. I like the ride, I like the space and comfort, and of course the illusion of a little off road ability. This includes being able to cross a flooded road without hydraulic-ing the engine. And of course, the ease of climbing in and out for us old gits has no small part in all this.
Anyone else 'get' it ?

'kin 'ell !!!!! that would have drowned a unimog, let along a Paj. When I say flood, I mean stuff that would bother ordinary cars, so a foot deep of standing water for example. Matey should have carried on forwards..?

"Others have claimed that they take up road space, but this has been de-bunked. Others say that they cannot see ahead of them but have been educated to drive to these conditions now, so that is no longer a problem for them."

Since when? A RR Sport is 20% wider than a passat!! Neither an X5/X6/RR Sport / Q7 can even fit in normal parking bays so they usually take up two.

Educated to drive to these conditions? WHAT? They drive me nuts. They are bad taste. I hate being stuck behind them and I hate the fact I am forced to make a more dangerous overtake to get past them. Yes I'm bigoted about them. I'm equally bigoted about someone who throws litter out the window or flytips.

They are dangerous, ugly and obnoxious and should be taxed to death. As for needing them in the South of England in Winter - all that is required are winter tyres. Safety? you're much more likely to actually have the accident as primary safety is compromised by weight, high centre of gravity and shear bulk.

What about this as a more reasonable choice?

Oh and I really do struggle to get past them as my daily driver sports a whopping 103hp and weights 1350kg !

Your car weighs more than my Duster SUV, and is slightly weedier. Except mine can do a bit of water and maybe some snow...

mine does have a 500 litre boot, you can sit on the boot floor as it's totally flat and like any car is fine with water and snow.
Amazing achievements by Top Gear in atrocious conditions with normal cars.
Think your link, and the duster are quite similar. Except mine is half the price with a bigger boot, but I may be wrong about the boot.
