So I'm looking at getting a Pug 106 GTi S2 in the new year as my next car to replace my ageing and awful Fiesta. while dreary and boring to be in and drive, it has been very reliable.

I've been looking through the many forums and the general feeling is that the majority are dependable with the odd horror story here and there. Is this an accurate idea?

My commute in the morning takes less time than my car does to actually heat up, so it isn't a particularly bad problem if it doesn't start one morning, I could probably walk to work in less than 30 minutes, However on weekends I rack up the miles which could potentially suck...

In short, if someone could tell me some of the stuff to look out for when finding potential cars and when I go to view them, It'd be much appreciated, either that or some links to forums where someone has already asked the same question and I was too stupid to find it biggrin

Thanks,

Tom.

I'd LOVE a 306 GTi, however it's not viable with insurance costs and what not frown

I'll be looking out for a basically unmolested one hopefully with low-ish (sub 90k) miles and as I still live at home I can afford to save up a decent stash for a quality example.

Thanks guys, that's exactly what I was hoping to hear biggrin I've done SORT OF big miles in my friend's Saxo and it's not too bad, even after being dropped on it's arse with a 3" pipe all the way...

Aaand now I want one even quicker. It sounds like you can squeeze out more MPG than what i get from my fezz which is always a positive, however with almost double the bhp/tonne i doubt i'll be driving too economically. i have driven a 306 GTi briefly and i loved the half leather seats, oodles of support and quite squishy.

Colour-wise I want the cherry red, silver or blaaaaack.

I had a 106 Gti as a daily for 11 months, did 16k and drove it pretty hard on occasions, so I'm pretty well placed to answer this.

I won't rant anymore but I loved mine, easily the most fun car I've ever had and is a future classic IMO. Just go for Cherry red or Sundance Yellow :P
I don't suppose you can comment on the driving position compared to a 306 gti?

oosh, I'm only 5ft8 on a good day, so the peddle box being too small is never going to be an issue, likewise i'll always be able to get behind the wheel.

it'll be staying as standard as humanly possible, i'm only 19 so without driving around with the mods undeclared I can't afford.

they've been the cheapest on comparison sites too, so i'll likely be going with them. That and Diamond for girls weirdly... £650 is bloody good to say i'm on no accidents, 1 years ncb and 19, mine's slightly more than double that on quotes!

Driven by Clarkson when it was new for one of his videos smile
link to the video? looks very nice, what exhaust are you running?

I was looking at a rallye initially, but I think I'd prefer some of the creature comforts the GTI has that the rallye is lacking, future classic and possible profit aside.

the rear axle issue is the only real thing that's worrying me, it's cropped up on a few sites and sounds like a £400 fix regardless of what you do.

Luckily I've got time on my hands and my dad has been in the motoring trade for donkeys years so all should go swimmingly biggrin

I can't moan about air con particularly when my fiesta doesn't have it, so that's fine. At least the rear axle is nice and easy to check as well, and £200 odd is much nicer sounding to fix than £400 biggrin

Gah I'm too excited now, I may have to get an early Xmas present to myself... Regarding wheels, exhaust and shocks I'm aiming for as standard as humanly possible, if not a set of 205 GTI alloys would be prime.

I know a vts and a 106 gti are the same cars, but the 106 interior is a million times nicer (to me) than the inside of a saxo

Whatever I can be bothered saving really. In an ideal world, it'd be £1500 as a sort of limit, but if something pristine comes up for say £2000 I can obviously stretch out an extra chunk. Likewise if something comes up for £1000 I've got some money to fix issues

What about an ST170 or clio 172? I'd be trying both of them if I wanted a hot hatch for 2K.
Tried insurance on a Clio initially and it was so ludicrously high I didn't even bother looking any further :') seems to be VW's and pugs that are cheaper for my to insure and not a whole lot more

Not say in a vts but my friend has a T reg saxo (west coast or some st?) and it doesn't tickle my pickle, however it's likely that a vts will be nicer than his

Very similar. He's gained a yellow gearstick from somewhere though biggrin

The general consensus does seen to be buy off condition with these and disregard the miles.

be buy off condition with these and disregard the miles.

Thanks for all the help anyway guys, not a bad start to what will probably be many hours at work on the PH forums... I'll post up whatever I buy in the end, possibly a picture of my current car when I get my camera back

I can very easily encorporate 10 miles or so of prime B roads into my commute wink it does mean doubling the time taken but hey ho
