Cheap Summer Fun (MX5 etc.)?

Have a FL2 as the main wheels and now the sun is coming out I'm regretting ever having sold my Boxster.

Any suggestions on something cheap that I could run as a bit of fun and not lose much on? MX5 leaps to mind - ideally something where a couple of grand should get a nice car and not a knackered banger

Not so fussed about speed as just a bit of fun. I did see a Smart Roadster but hadn't realised they still cost so much.

MR2 just about sneaks in sub £2k - what else am I blatantly overlooking?
