Autotrader now clearly highlighting Cat C/D on ads!
Discussion
Has this ruined the game for the folk trying to hide such things? I noticed for the first time tonight, it now shows Cat D and so on underneath the main title of ads for cars on the insurance write off database.
Funny how some of the ads make no mention at all of the cars ever being written off. I don't think these sellers have noticed yet.....
Anyway, good on AT for adding some much needed transparency to things.

I noticed a lot of cheap E46 330i's were on the hit list last night.
One of them even had a seller pleading (in barely legible fashion) with people to go and see it because it was so great and fast etc. but no mention whatsoever of the write off.
As a resident of Leeds, the West Yorkshire thing really annoys me as I worry that if I don't take extra care to specify that I am in Leeds and not elsewhere in West Yorks, people may be put off when I have a car for sale.

Shows up on the mobile version of the website.
None of the adverts stated they were cat C or D... One on a cat C even said in the first sentence that it was a good safe car to drive!
The first one I saw actually did, so I looked at a few more to see if that was some AT insert or if the seller had chose to write it. Turns out that was the only honest seller of the lot! It does make for an interesting lunchtime though.. who can find the most expensive undeclared writeoff?
edit: I'll start the ball rolling..
A "fine example" indeed

Well maintained.... Full BMW SH..... Is that before AND after the write off?

I like the FSH availability but zero ref to the Cat D by the seller. Presumably a detail he was hoping to avoid. This suggests that the punters have not realised on AT currently how that the game is afoot with clear evidence of such matters in this new format. I like the change: I think it is the way all web car ads need to go and the more accurate information made clear to the buyers the better. What is this car worth now that the Cat D is apparent? Any suggestions I am no BMW expert.
Not sure, but that price would be about bang on for a non write off higher miles car. sat1983 said:
Genius! I still would run a check regardless of a garage claiming such, and it would seem I'd be entirely correct to do so. The Moose said:
So, as I predicted earlier in this thread, this is a total waste of time!
I've been looking around at something to add to the fleet and looked at a rather nice looking car. Reasonably priced. Did not list as CAT-D/C on the Autotrader but in fact if you HPI the thing is coming back as listed on the VCAR.
It doesn't matter to me at all now as the car is sold - some poor fker has probably bought it thinking now Autotrader has this thing highlighting whether it's a CAT D/C they're safe and don't need to HPI the car.
More fool them for not doing their own check?I've been looking around at something to add to the fleet and looked at a rather nice looking car. Reasonably priced. Did not list as CAT-D/C on the Autotrader but in fact if you HPI the thing is coming back as listed on the VCAR.

It's a useful tool for filtering those cars out. You should still always check before buying any car, unless you're not bothered. I'm sure unscrupulous dealers are now entering the reg of a similar car to hide the history. If this is found to be the case, these traders should be banned from AT.

Okay so I've got a different scenario. A car I'm interested in is showing on A/T listing as a CAT C. I have run an independent HPI report via mycarccheck and it comes back all clear. The buyer is unaware of any total loss and does not know why the A/T listing is such.
Does that mean it's okay and A/T have picked up a false marker or should I still be concerned. I should add it is a very limited market, there are only 7 for sale in the UK.
Grateful if there is another way of checking!?
If I was spending more than a couple of grand and was genuinely worried then I'd get a proper HPI check with the HPI guarantee I think. That would provide me enough peace of mind. Alternatively, you could query it with AT?
