I doubt the police (anyway, what police?) would do me for undertaking in those circumstances as I wasn't weaving in and out dangerously, just making normal steady progress at the speed limit and keeping to the left, just like you are supposed to.

It's really bizarre, because the people in the other lanes were not even going at the speed limit!

If they did try and do me for undertaking I'd definitely have my day in court and submit the video evidence. I'd be very surprised if a magistrate would uphold such a charge in the circumstances...

The Police can't be everywhere unfortunately, especially on the motorway.

I'm not sure barreling down lane 1 in excess of the speed limit is going to encourage people to keep left either.
Except I wasn't speeding, as I already stated.

If you stay in the outside lane on that stretch and intend to turn off at Gatwick as I did, you often find there is a queue on the slip road and out onto the carriageway, and so you would find it difficult to get into the left hand lane as people block you because they think you are "pushing in". So it makes sense to keep left early on.

Mind you, I suppose the chance of there being a queue could also be a reason for people sitting in the middle lane if they aren't coming off at that junction, because they won't want to end up stuck at the back of that queue.

As an example, let's focus on the white Fiesta in the middle lane - what exactly, specifically, did you expect the driver to do, calibrax?
Keep left? It's not like there wasn't any space to his left before I got there...

I am indeed telling you that hogging the middle lane is not an offence, and it doesn't carry a fine and three points.
I beg to differ.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-23713732

"Careless drivers across Britain who hog lanes or tailgate can now be punished with on-the-spot police fines.

Under the new measures, officers can issue £100 fines and three points rather than taking drivers to court."

And they are enforcing it too...

And before you get all pedantic and say :

"there's no specific offence of 'lane hogging', it comes under 'careless driving'"

...that's like saying...

"there's no specific offence of 'killing people', it comes under 'murder' or 'manslaughter'"...
