Basically I have a new insignia estate diesel doing a genuine 44-45mpg and my wife had a mini one. ( aside from toys and projects etc.) we need to change the mini and where we are situated we suffer from severe weather once it hits. (I know that May only be a few days a year) i spend currently approx 4-5k on diesel on my own and my wife does near the same. I want to find something big enough for twins will get me out in 'normal' bad conditions and won't double my fuel consumption. Plus it need to be fit to tow normal trailers.(nothing extreme)

No I dont think it would buy an x1 yet. I would benefit from the 4x4 throughout the year as well as the work I do would allow for regular use of it capabilites.

C crosser and jeep patriot both sound good. Biggest problem is im in NI and the selection is crap unless I travel to the mainland.

Extreme weather worrying you?
FWD and good winter tyres will cope with anything on road in the winter.
Ha. Under normal conditions I would completely agree with you. I have a mark 4 1250 zetec fiesta lying about and put a set of spare autograsss wheels I had on it and used it in the snow last yr, it was awesome until the big snow hit 4-5 ft in middle of the field and 10ft + drifts then to be honest I don't think a soft roader will do much either.

I do like the Idea of the traditional 4wd/SUV type vehicle rather than a 4wd car as it's going nowhere in bad weather up here and isn't just as good for towing. But to be honest I think that's just stigma I have in my head.

No. The Diesel engine is horrid, and will do 30mpg on a good day.
That's what I thought.
