I'm not quite in the market yet, need to sell my current car 1st. I'm looking for ideas at the moment. I want a car that's as fast as my 270bhp AE86 (probably mid 4's to 60mph) but that's a bit more useable. It needs to be something that's able to be left in a train station car park all day (my 86 is too easy to be stolen and would draw loads of attention). Ideally it'd have rear seats.

I'm good at working on cars and happy to put something interesting together myself.

I have been looking at modified Mitsubishi Evo's but I think the 4wd might make it a bit boring.

I'd like an RX7 but my commute is only 10 mins and the engine won't get warmed up properly and that's bad news on a wankel so that's out.

I have seen a E46 M3 that's supercharged for 11k, that'll probably be sold by the time I'm in the market but it's an interesting idea, I could look to build one myself maybe.

I am keen on the Maserati 3200gt (probably would remap it to get the performance). I love the looks, the badge and a twin turbo v8. I've not been in one but from reading various reviews of the time, they don't actually sound all that good as a drivers car. Maybe it's a bit too GT for my tastes.

A Monaco (lightly tuned) is probably the sensible option. They just don't really do it for me.

Anyone have any interesting ideas?

I'm not sure I want 4x4 and if I do it'd be an Evo probably. I like rwd, for me the fun part of my brief comes from getting the back end out a bit. I think i'd get bored of a straight line missile after a while.

I love the look of RS4's but that's it.

I wouldn't want a RS4, they are boring. The best thing about them is the look of them.

A few people have mentioned M3. I think everyone missed the key word when I originally mentioned one. That was "supercharged". I wouldn't want a standard one.

Are the later blob eye DCCD Imprezas as good as/better than the older Type-R's? The only thing that puts me off one is the image.

An M5 is too big for me. Same for the Alpina B10 mentioned earlier (plus an auto is no fun).

08 plate BMW 135i. No one will give it a second look and with a few choice tweaks will be pretty quick ?
Don't think £10k will get you in one.
And they are no where near the bracket i'm wanting performance wise

My brother had a VX220, I like it but wouldn't consider it a daily drive prospect.

That S2000 is interesting. I don't know much about the engines but I wonder if 350bhp is near the limit of a stock bottom end?

A Z4M is out of my price range and probably a bit slower than I want.

The R32 and R33's do appeal to me but I think they are a bit old these days, not sure I'd fancy one as a daily. The Supra has never really done it for me. I like them, love the fact they are really tuneable but just never really wanted one, not sure if it's because they are a bit fat.

I've spotted a lovely Impreza Type-R in the PH classifieds, 450bhp forged engine, big brakes, seems a great spec for only 8k.

The only problem for the Impreza is the image, i'd be embarrassed if I was to drive it past a group of women for example. That wouldn't be the case in a Maserati 3200. (I know I'm probably moving the goal posts)

I might be interested. There are currently 2 supercharged M3's i've seen advertised, one on ebay and one on Auto Trader at a dealer. Both are 11k. Is your mates one of these or another one?

You're right, it's not easy to come up with something that'll fit my brief. That's the reason for the thread.

The S2000 turbo is a good choice and something I hadn't considered before. Same goes for a DCCD Impreza Type R. That's 2 options that weren't really on my radar.

I have to say, I think the idea of a supercharged M3 is winning. Good power, from what i'm reading, economy isn't bad either. While they are dated they are still nice enough inside (compared to an Impreza, RX7, Supra, etc). They are also practical enough, I could get my daughters child seat in the back if needed.

Captain awesome, I sent you an email message.
