I'm looking at getting my first car, hopefully within the next few weeks, and I'm not too sure what to get. I'm 18 and have been passed for 6months. I need something with cheap insurance (obviously), any ideas? Sorry I forgot to say with a max budget of around £1800

Far too much common sense around here. Has PH turned into What Car?

I got a Celica Gen 7 for my first car a few months ago, It's not great on fuel but I love it!
That's over £4000 for me to get insured on that! haha

Have a look at odd cars for an 18 year old, such as estates and people carriers. They can often be very cheap on insurance.
I've had a look at Volvo's, Alfa's, BMW's and Audi cars yet all of them seem to be at least £2000+! Obviously not cheap for me :/

Where do you live? What are you planning to use the car for?

If mainly social use - ie. pub trips and the occasional holiday - maybe try just borrowing your parents' car(s) whenever you need one?
Either go on their insurance for a year, as 3rd driver with a tiny mileage, or some companies (eg. LV) will add on to a policy for a week or two at a time.
If very occasionally you & parents both really need the car, take theirs and pay them to hire one.
Obviously there are some conditions to this working out - where you live, what cars your family has, how well you get on with your parents etc.

I've done this for the last 2 years and it works out very cheap.

Otherwise, try 7-seaters eg. Zafira. Apparently they're cheaper than you'd think to insure, also a bit different.
Sorry for the late reply!
I live in Leicestershire and I'll be using the car getting to and from college everyday (which is roughly 18miles awayfor the first year of my apprenticeship anyway), usual stuff like going to shop, going places with my bike (car doesn't necessarily need to be big as I could get a bike rack) and then visiting friends at various uni's.
The cars my parents drive have a 4.4l and a 3.2l engine (give or take) as well as being automatic so there's no chance of getting insured on either especially as they are used constantly. If I could get insured on one of my parents cars for two years or so would be great but obviously not possible.
And the zafira isn't greatly cheap saying I've been passed for 6months and the cheapest I could get for it is £1679.39
