Convoys. What on earth? Why?
Discussion
As the title.
If there is a meeting or show, a lot of people want to travel in convoys. Why is that? I am genuinely interested as I can't imagine why anyone would want to do that. Showing off? Turning up mob-handed? dunno.
Harley riders love it for some reason too.
On a personal note, I prefer to go alone. Don't mind a bit of a dust up with another car, but otherwise no.
So please explain this to me..........

Not sure if serious? But just in case you are:
For fun
For friendship
So newbies know where they are going
For that early shared coffee at a motorway services with a bunch of like minded mates
When organising a stand at a show, its easier to have everyone turn up at a similar time, so all joining up at a point before makes organising it easier
Etc etc…

Did this for a club event once, started of with around 60 cars and ended up with about 5.
Whole thing was a nightmare and not too mention dangerous at times with cars going slow on the motorway waiting for the backmarkers, then others trying to catch up at 130+.....
then whoever was organising it wasnt great.Whole thing was a nightmare and not too mention dangerous at times with cars going slow on the motorway waiting for the backmarkers, then others trying to catch up at 130+.....
Last one I was in the first lead car had a walkie talkie and the last car had one too. If the convoy got split the last car would simply get in front when safe and steer the back half onwards. leaving the front lot to cruise along.
But then its normally to a big event like Silverstone so everyone knows where they are going anyway

Broken down, lost? Use a mobile 'phone, perchance?
I can understand meeting at a services or whatever and arranging where you will next meet etc. Otherwise no thanks - but each to their own.

If you need it explaining it's not for you and no matter what anyone says you will not be convinced. As many have said above it makes a show a more social event and if the cars are interesting ones then it is amazing the reaction a group gets from the public who will rarely see a TVR, Aston, Lambo, Ferrari etc yet alone a group of say 10 or more at the same time.
Then again I am sad enough that I will stop and just listen to the convoys of sports bikes that take on our village bypass, the sound of a group of bikes or nice cars is something to be enjoyed while you still can and if you get to see them aswell then all the better.
Obviously convoys are not the OPs cup of tea but we all enjoy our P&J's in different ways.

Because people who go to car shows like to draw as much attention as possible to themselves. It is normally the slowest possible way of getting somewhere with the highest risk of some twunt you have never met before driving into the back of you because he or she was looking at their reflection in the mirror. Been there done that.
