Anyone got daily insurance before?

Gents,
Just a quick one.
I'm only 20, and need to get temporary insurance for about 2 weeks.
Due to my age, they want to charge a fortune. I've been quoted a staggering £350 for 2 weeks on 1.6 Diesel Golf (my mums).
I just put all my bits on compare the market, and I can just get an annual policy for £400 for another 50 weeks worth of use.
If I were to take this out, and just cancel within the 14 days, presume that would be about £50? (£30 admin charge, no cancellation fee as within 14 days, 2 weeks worth of cover £20 for actual use of policy).
Anyone done this before; is it as simple as that?
