Now that you can pay monthly does it mean you can tax a car for only 3 months of the year if thats all the use you need ?

I have just gone to tax my winter 4x4 wanting to use the pay monthly option with a view to only taxing for 3 or 4 months only to discover that the pay monthly option states that the duration of tax is for 12 months .

Does this mean if I cancel the direct debit after 3 months and sorn the vehicle the DVLA will come after me for the remaining 9 payments?
