Hopefully a "quick question".

Ordered a new car back end of October, (low estimate was Dec29th for delivery, without including Christmas shutdowns, hence probably into Jan)
Dont <need> it until February. (have always been clear on that with the dealer)

Just received text message from manufacturer "Car is now built and en route to dealer" (sudden change, because yesterday status was "awaiting scheduling")

Am looking at owning for 6years (assuming its the right car). Haven't spoken to the dealer yet, but spidey sense is saying they might want (for bonus reasons?) to register it for the road before 31/12/14.

Will they do that without me intervening?
There are only very modest benefits to me of getting it sooner rather than later (intended driver is ineligible until Feb), but also costs (insurance etc)

Any longer term residual value differences between a 2014 and 2015 registered car - it will still be a '64 plate?

No. The motor trade guides do take into account year as well as plate.
Certainly when I was doing the original research ads were filtered by year first, then plate. (It was never the intention to get new, so spent a while looking at 2nd hand)

But you're also right, that message came in this morning, it could take 4weeks to get to the local dealer. And the other post about in 6yrs it not making much difference is also valid, but my preference is for 2015 regardless.

No difference at all in future values as the plate remains the same.
I'm sure the dealer will want to register it for there monthly target, but without your signature on the afrl form they won't be doing anything.....
AFRL ?

I think I'll leave it a bit, then have a word with the dealer. It could be worth quite a bit to them to register it in Q4, and so will make my back available for scratching.

An afrl (automated first registration and licensing system) is a form with your details on, that's used to register you to your new car with the dvla. It must be signed before the car can be registered.
Cool. Thanks.

The one thing to double check; is the car going to be on finance? If you ordered in Q3 on finance, you will probably have to have it registered by the 31st of December as a condition of the finance agreement. If you ordered it in Q4, it will most likely be fine for a Jan car as will be Q1 2015. Just something to consider.
Hmm... thanks I'll check that, paperwork is elsewhere.

Though, I would be very disappointed if that is the case. Not saying I wouldn't accept it in 2014, just that I don't want to "have to" bearing in mind how specific we were at time of order.

Just pick up the phone to the dealer you are buying from.
Yeah, I will. The purpose of me creating the thread/asking the question was so that I was armed with data before I do that.

Co-incidentally I called in on the dealers on Saturday (it was a convenient place to park and pull over to deal with a flurry of missed phone calls). Salesman said he'd planned to give me an update on Monday anyway unaware that I'd signed up to tracking.

He's offered to keep the car in storage at the dealers, with any protective polythene still on, until we need it.
Which to be honest is the result I wanted.

(Overall it looks like the entire process will take less than 8weeks despite their official paperwork (he showed it me on Saturday) sill saying to expect 13, and over winter/Christmas I'd argue its not unreasonable to take slightly longer)

So thanks chaps for the guidance on the DVLA forms/redidual value differences, I'd wanted to be forearmed, but sounds like I dont need to be.
