Just noticed the engine warning light is on. I've checked everything over and can't see any problems. The oils fine, filters are fine, head should be ok, fuel filler cap is tight, leads and plugs are fine, just had a brand new starter, compression is good, no leaks anywhere, the cat should be fine because acceleration is fine and the fuel consumption is the same as ever.

Is there anything else I should check before getting it diagnosed?

If this is the RX-8 from your profile, then no, the engine warning light doesn't come on if it's due a service...

You say you have a new starter and that you know plugs, leads coils and compressions are fine - does this mean you have recently had a problem with a misfire? If so, how long ago?

It might be something simple..
never had a misfire since i've had the car

Shame you are not local as I would 'read' the fault for free. Most faults I've 'read' are normally emission problems.
do you have one of those fault code readers? I've seen some on ebay for about £10 but I don't know if they really diagnose the problem or just tell you there is one.
