I'm in the market for a new car and need some guidance. Budget is 6.5-7k

My current choices are:

1 - Ford Mondeo Estate / 2.5T / 31k miles / £6k
2 - Vauxuall Insignia / 1.8i / 40-65k miles / £4,000-£6.5k
3 - Vauxhall Zafira / 1.8i / 40-60k miles / £5k-6.5k
4 - Vauxhall Vectra / 1.8 or 2.0 petrol / 50-65k / 2.5k-4.5k

I've also spotted a few Saab's for the same price but I know nothing about them!

Your help would be appriciated!

Needs to be spacious and comfortable for a car load of 5 on occasions where needed. I have a family and a little one who starts school next year, so anticipating boot space is required smile

I've found a 2.2 Vectra for 4k ith 49k, worth a test drive?

The fuel isn't a massive issue! I've spoken to a few people who have one and they spend £50-60 more then what I already pay.

What's wrong with the 2.2?

Really nice but the tax is out of my range - £285 is the most I'm willing to go!

While I love the mondeo, its 105 miles away making it hard to get to for a test drive. Struggling to find something local frown

Would you put the 1.8 VVT in for a shout? Found a few local to me!

Nothing wrong with that engine, just make sure that it is the VVT version and it's had the required belt changes
Cheers - I think I'll have to bite the bullet and get over there tomorrow!

Any others you'd recommend for my requirements?

Are high mileage cars really worth buying? While I like it, and appreciate your suggestions, I'm not looking for a diesel! I don't want potential DPF issues!

I think I'm set on the Mondeo biggrin I'm heading out later today to a local garage to see if my son can see out while using his car seat and if the wife is happy too, will drop a deposit on it biggrin

The only one I haven't driven from your list is the Vectra.

The 1.8i Insignia is slow and drinks more fuel than you'd imagine. I have had several as hire cars, and even on a run from Aberdeen to Edinburgh I couldn't better 35mpg. Really narrow boot opening, which was a bit awkward.

The Zafira is an old car now, and the interior feels is. I drove one on a round trip from Edinburgh to Forres and back, and really didn't enjoy it.

I've not driven a Mondeo with that engine, but the diesel one that I drove was fine. Best interior out of the lot, and utterly massive inside.

I wouldn't discount the Skoda Octavia.
wow, thanks for your feedback.

The way I look at it is why buy a car which will do instead of a car I want. The tax difference between some of these is in the region of £40 so I'm not fussed and happy to pay £285, the Mondeo is #1 at the moment. I've currently got a 1.4TDCI which drives great and I really love it but at 142k miles, its starting to show its age. I now need something bigger, extended family, and for other reasons too, which is why the mondeo would be perfect.

I'm not sure on the vectra tbh and driven a few with that interiour but I think it would do my head in after some time, but they were just find to drive. My concern with the octavia is the high mileage, for less or roughly the same price, I can get cars with less mileage.

I'm also steering clear from a diesel. I have one now with no DPF and read some nasty stories regarding the DPF and really don't need the hassle.

Mondeo. The 2.5T is a lovely engine if a little thirsty. A Bluefin upgrade seems to improve matters. The Vauxhall 1.8VVT is a nice engine but performance is stunted by high gearing. The 2.2 engine had a reputation for lunching Fuel Pumps but they seemed to sort them out under Warranty at the time. A bit lazier than the 1.8 but still a strong engine.

Personally I would avoid the Vectra and Zafira. The Vectra is knocking on a bit and the Zafira for me has an uncomfortable driving position.
To be honest, my heart is on the Mondeo biggrin

Blufin Upgrade, will it really make a noticeable difference? The mpg isn't going to bother me too much but I won't say NO to an improvement wink
