Cadillac CTS-V - Detroit 2015

A saloon that's more powerful than the new Ford GT? That'll be the big Cadillac!

And our final car from the Detroit show - one for anybody who thinks that the BMW M5, Mercedes E63 AMG S or Audi RS7 is a bit underpowered. Because the new Cadillac CTS-V boasts no less than 640hp.

Two hundred miles per hour. In a Cadillac
Two hundred miles per hour. In a Cadillac
Of course, with Cadillac's turbulent relationship with Europe (on-off-on-off-on-off by our reckoning), it's unlikely that anyone in the UK is going to be in a CTS-V without privately importing it any time soon. But we should still celebrate a saloon that uses what's basically a very slightly detuned version of the Corvette Z06's supercharged V8 engine. And which is claimed to be capable of 200mph.

On the stand in Detroit it looked good, in an understated way. There's a mesh grille at the front and a subtle spoiler on the back of the bootlid, but otherwise it might as well be - to the casual observer - a boggo V6 on some big wheels. The cabin is similarly understated, but noticeably higher quality than the last time we experienced a previous-generation CTS.

All in all, probably as far from the sort of vast, wobbling old-school Cadillacs that most Europeans still associate with the brand name. And that's a good thing, right?
