Now I enjoy a fast car as much as the next person on here but that isn't my point.
My point is stupid exhaust noises.
I'm not only on about chavs with their cherry bomb special I mean all cars with loud exhausts that aren't 700bhp super cars or classic cars.
What is the point in having your car fitted with a large and loud exhaust?
It will annoy you on a long journey and when you're driving around town you'll look like a cock, in-fact there isn't much more cockish than seeing a young guy wearing a vest driving something vtec and flooring it everywhere in traffic with his crappy look at me exhaust. Yes when you have a big exhaust everyone will look at you but they are not thinking wow look at that person, he's pretty cool...
Now for those times when you go out on a hoon you might feel like a racing driver whilst your car goes vroom vroom but you don't hoon all day and everyday so I just don't see the point in a loud exhaust.
Obviously as mentioned when a car can't help but be loud that is fine, my old Mini was rather loud for a little car and my friend's dad old TVR was the same. It is just when people change their standard exhaust for a fart cannon. That bothers me.

No like I said. I love driving and I love a great sounded car. But I don't get why you'd want that all the time.
After the rush at work the last thing I'd want is to start something that sounds like a V10 F1 engine.

I don't agree with that at all.

Infact by your logic cars like Nissan GTR, Porsche GT3 RS, C63 AMG, RS6, Lotuses etc fall short of your "700bhp".
I was exaggerating with 700bhp

I also don't like the car modifying snobbery that goes on, the oh it's a £100k Lamborghini so it can make as much noise as possible where as someone with for argument sake a hot hatch with a cat back exhaust is told they are a chav/attention seeker/knob.It's clear that both owners have largely the same intentions!
Only difference is one car was designed to be all shouty and one car wasn't, that second car is someone who is trying to be all shouty. That is annoying.

If it isn't louder exhausts do you get annoyed by other modifications that possibly lead to increased attention?

It is just the loud noise.
Sometimes I like things to be quiet.

So in summary when YOU want the world to be quiet it should be quiet, when YOU want to hear noise it is acceptable.

Double standards!
Well when I'm sat in a restaurant eating a nice meal and then a stupid Civic Type R drives past in first gear so everyone can hear him yes it annoys me.

When it is on a race track I like it extremely loud.

I could say that if I saw a BMW 318 sat outside this restaurant it would annoy me that this person hasn't bought an M3 for me see out of the window and look at, and that it is annoying that this person hasn't bought something to please a complete stranger.
See how silly that sounds?
Difference is the 318 isn't screaming at you wink

I appreciate many on PH will laugh at this, but there is such a thing as an exhaust which is too loud for the road.
Isn't there a DB law? Or have I made that up.

Crappy econoboxes with fart cans are the main cause of noise pollution. They look and sound st and 99% of them are fitted with no other mods, or mods that give naff all benefit. There are some I4's that can pull it off but in the main I really dislike aftermarket exhausts on anything under 5 cylinders.

I think I have heard enough chav's in Impreza's to last me a lifetime. I don't recall Richard Burns having a 4" backbox?

My point.

I think it's pretty obvious the problem lies in the lower end aftermarket tat. Nobody is really suggesting something like an E30 M3, BDA or anything else with a properly tuned manifold and exhaust is in the same league.

I didn't run a standard exhaust on my Subaru. I had a genuine STI one.
It wasn't big. It wasn't loud at all, whisper quiet actually.

Your are such a money snob it is unreal. So as long as you have plenty of money then it is ok to have a loud exhaust on your car. How do you know the Impreza with the large loud exhaust hasn't had a larger turbo fitted and an expensive manifold/down pipe and full sports CAT system? Idiot
No, as long as you have a nice sounding engine it's ok to have some soul coming out of the back.

Cheap aftermarket stty exhausts do nothing apart from make noise, stty horrible noise. They are usually attached to stty horrible cars which will likely have all manor of things which are slightly knackered. These cretins will normally be found circulating car parks and the like. Calling me a snob is way off the mark, you spent more on your ST remap than I did on my last car Mr Moneybags. A decent exhaust isn't the exclusive right of 'monied' petrol heads (you included), you just have to sort the chaff out. Perhaps, just perhaps a horrible fart can costs a similar amount as something that actually works.....

idea

As for the RB5 (if it's not a fake) how do I know it didn't have a bigger turbo, I don't, but let's say it's highly likely that it hasn't and that the ground clearance is going to be a bit of a problem. What about the Saxo, I guess that has a works engine and Sadev box, silly me, all this time I never knew that it's all a huge 'in' joke to throw us all off the scent.

That is all very well but I like the gruff off-beat thump of an Impreza's engine.

I get your point, rubbish exhausts are rubbish but you can not tell by appearance if the exhaust is 'stty' or not and in regard to the Impreza and Saxo, I don't think they look 'stty', I do not like the huge pipe on the Saxo but I think it looks fine on the Impreza. Calling you a snob isn't off the mark when you regard some drivers as 'cretins'. The people in car parks with debatable modifications to their cars are usually young drivers, we were all young once mate, they are only doing what they do becuase they enjoy it and in regard to their 'stty' cars, most young drivers don't have the money to buy a better car (or they might be happy with a Saxo at 17/18 like I was years ago).

I understand your point now. Regardless of cost, you are saying yes there can be good or bad sounding exhausts, I agree with you there. But you can't tell just by looking at the type of car and the size of the pipe at the back whether or not it will sound good. The Impreza (RB5 or not is irrelevant, as regardless, they will sound the same), that is why I used the word snob.
Well I'll happily be called a snob for having an opinion of car park muppets who are just a bloody pain in the ass to everyone. The selfish bds have their fun at the expensive of everyone else trying to go about their normal daily business. Why the hell should I have any respect for anyone who sits in a car park and will randomly fire up the car to delight their little crowd of brain dead friends, I'd like to go late night shopping please, can I go without driving through what looks like a fusion of Lord of the Rings and Le Mans? If you do dare to cast a glance in their direction you will likely be met with 'wot u faaacking lookin' at m8' or when you leave will have a stty car making a st ton of noise glued to your bumper, only to turn around at the roundabout give you a blast of the horn and return to the nest. Vermin. The should all be sold for experimentation.

Anyway back OT.

You're right. You can't tell what the exhaust 'is' but watching how the car is driven and the mindset of the person driving it you can make a very good judgement. I'll bet most of the noisy types I encounter will have spent more on the exhaust and the cheapest coil overs (to get the stance bruv) than what it would have cost for something more interesting. Yes we were all young once and did stupid things but back then it was all about mopeds and small bikes, which generally lobbed you into a field when you mis-behaved.
