Eurgh. GF is adamant she want some kind of SUV thing to replace current car, and dreams of an Evoque, which fills me with horror - as does the thought of a mong faced Quashkai (although I know the current model gets good reviews). I drove a Renault Kaptur at Christmas as a rental which she seemed to love, but it was the most revoltingly underpowered pile of junk I have ever experienced (with the eco mode turned on the accelerator basically just stops working). What are the least worst options I should consider? Open to second hand, doesn't have to be new. Not open to piles of expensive blinged out cack that go horribly wrong after 30,000 miles.

ha! true - but one can at least guide someone who knows nothing about cars towards the least worst option that a) she likes b) isn't a piece of stty underpowered junk that will go bang after 10k

I've driven most of the VWG ones and I'd go with a Yeti – get the 170PS diesel and it's not boringly slow either.

ETA: It's also capable of being thrown down a B road at a surprising pace for what it is!
been flicking through the various things suggested here. The Yeti is a seriously butt-ugly box - no?

Subaru Forester? Legacy Outback?
now these I like. Interested by that grey import guy in the PH classifieds who seems to bring in JDM STI ones. Too good to be true? Bad idea in terms of insurance and servicing?

I would say also look at a Lexus RX. Considering one myself as they're an absolutely lovely place to be.
good call. And far enough from the Partridge style models to still have some cachet

Sit your lovely wife in a lovely car.
Evoque it is.

Qashqai, Captur & Co are chastity belts on wheels vomit
exactly. I know car image is subjective etc and someone will be along to flame me. But Evoque screams "I'm Jordan, or an Essex drug dealer" and the others just scream "I have given up on life and am content to be a dullard". *awaits torrent of abuse*
