£100K Garage: James Hurford

A classic Mustang, Mini and Escort is just half the story in James's selection

Name: James Hurford
Previously owned: Citroen AX, Vauxhall Cavalier, Skoda Octavia vRS, Subaru Legacy , BMW E90 3 Series (company car) Ford Mondeo (company car) and VW Golf estate (company car).
Currently owned: BMW E60 530d Touring, Mazda Eunos roadster
On the shortlist: "I wanted a Ferrari but I changed my mind due to the increase in prices which wouldn't let me scratch any other itches. After careful reconsideration this list is my 'car itch scratching post except for a Ferrari'. Snappy title!"

Ford Escort RS2000
Cost:
£28,500
Balance: £71,500
Why I chose it: "When I was a young lad my Dad's cousin had a black RS2000. He was also a police trained driver. When he took me out for few fun runs around south Bristol it certainly made an impression! I know they aren't that fast but it's the looks that do it for me. That droop snoot is gloriously ugly, and the lurid green is fantastic."

MK Indy
Cost:
£9,995
Balance: £61,505
Why I chose it: "This looks sufficiently mental to keep me interested for a while! I would plan to do sprints, track days and some circuit racing in this."

Mini Cooper
Cost:
£3,750
Balance: £57,755
Why I chose it: "I have always wanted one of these. I have never even driven one which needs to be addressed, self preservation society and all that malarky."

Ford Mustang
Cost:
£22,990
Balance: £34,765
Why I chose it: "I love American muscle cars from the late 60s. Lazy V8s, appalling suspension and brakes but looks to die for and very cool to my probably misguided eyes. I don't like "Eleanor" and prefer the look of the Bullitt Mustang but as these would blow the budget this early one looks like a beauty. I particularly like the fact it is black and not massively modified."

TVR Cerbera
Cost:
£15,890
Balance: £18,905
Why I chose it: "I love the looks of these cars they are my favourite of the TVR stable. AJP8 is a must and the Top Gear drag race from eons ago cemented my feelings for this particular model."

VW Transporter Camper
Cost:
£9,500
Balance: £9,405
Why I chose it: "I don't really like any other camper vans and I would need this for two things: family camping trips (adding brownie points) and as a tow car for the MK Indy to weekend events (reducing brownie points)."

ECO Trailer velocity
Cost:
£6,600
Balance: £2,805
Why I chose it: "Transport for the MK Indy and a pit base in conjunction with the VW. I chose this one because it is black which I like and there is something I find pleasing about the shape. It looks brooding, like it contains something evil.

"The remaining cash would be for some driver training which I would need to get the best out of the Indy!"

Loving that RS2000 (price excepted) until I saw it had a Zetec engine conversion. Would have thought originality ruled for something like that, but perhaps that would have made it even more expensive.

Good choice of cars there. Note I said cars, not vans.
