X5 or Range Rover, or something else - approx £10k to spend

Just posting on behalf of a friend as this isn't my area of expertise and he isn't a member.
He is looking to get an SUV style vehicle for business and personal use, with approximately £10k to spend. He has his eye on either an X5 or Range Rover, but this isn't hard and fast.
Only does about 5k miles a year, so really probably wants to consider a petrol. Assume the high capacity engine variants would offer better value for money, plus it's just a bit more fun having the higher spec.
So, thoughts and suggestions? Anything to look out for?
