Porsche 968 Club Sport: Spotted

When Club Sport cost less than a regular model! How things have changed...

It was the colour that clinched it. The Porsche 968 Club Sport is a car that could have featured as a Spotted sooner (guess what? It's an old Porsche that's become more expensive) but something else has always been selected instead.

Riviera Blue though? We had to. It's a great colour, one inextricably linked to that 911 GT3 and always very rare too. Funnily enough it doesn't look that brilliant on a 968 to these eyes but, hey, it's a discussion point.

The Club Sport shouldn't need much introduction here. Launched as an attempt to rouse interest in the 968, a drastic range of weight saving measures was implemented: out with the rear seats, air-con, electric windows, stereo, power seats and even the airbag. Depending on where you read, anything between 50 and 100kg was saved over a regular 968.

The weight loss combined with tweaks to the suspension created another inspirational Club Sport Porsche, one journalists couldn't praise highly enough. And yet, despite a price tag £5K less than a regular 968, it didn't prove hugely popular with customers.

Those that are available appear to have enjoyed a nice value increase recently. Certainly it was a surprise to see this car at £28,750. Yes the mileage is low but, having not checked on 968s for a while, that seems quite a lot. Still, given the values of a contemporary 911 it doesn't look terrible.

And perhaps that's the way to look at this particular 968 Club Sport. It's been prepped even further for the track so it would seem rude not to enjoy the car where it performs best. Given current Porsche values it doesn't stand to lose a lot, if anything. Of course £30K is not an insignificant amount should the worst happen but this plain old 993 Carrera is nearly 50 per cent more expensive. For a car that won't be as capable down a B-road or on a track.

Many people have spoken recently about the danger of using what are becoming increasingly valuable RS Porsches. They are still fantastic things to use but are being safeguarded as investments with the incredible spike in values. Could the 968 Club Sport be the last Porsche special that could still be bought to enjoy? One to ponder.

Finally, if the Club Sport is a little too intense (or expensive), don't forget the UK-only 968 Sport. Built on the same production line as the CS but with much of the regular 968's equipment chucked back in, it should still provide much that's adored about the Club Sport on a more modest budget. This £12K 968 Sport is modified but has all the OEM parts still available. Only the very well off can make a Porsche track project from a 911 now (unless it's a 996), so is the 968 the next best alternative?
