I'm sure I'm doing nothing wrong but I'm getting so much bother, thought I'd check.

M40 heading East into London, past the Beaconsfield exit. I do this journey every evening. Four lanes. About a mile before the M25 exit the overhead signs tell you to get into the correct lanes. The 2 right lanes go straight on for London (that's me) and the 2 left lanes for the M25.

Because I am usually poodling along, in no great hurry, doing 60-65, I'm normally in the inside lane, so I indicate right and gradually move across so I'm sitting in lane 3. I don't cut anyone up, there's no hurry to get across, you have tonnes of time.

But when I'm in lane 3 of 4, I'd say probably every other night, some idiot will come hairing up behind me and stary flashing me to move over. Of course I don't, because I'm in the inside lane of the 2 London bound lanes, and I'm not about to move into the outside M25 bound lane. Eventually they get fed up of flashing, see I'm not going anywhere, and overtake me in lane 4. Often shaking fists and mouthing "fking get over", or similar.

What's wrong with these people? They are usually heading into town too so must know the outside 2 lanes are the London lanes. Although one tt who had flashed me, once ahead of me, suddenly realised he was about to miss the M25 turn off and had to veer across lane 4&3 to get into lane 2, which made me laugh.

Anyone else use this stretch of road and encounter similar idiocy.

I take the point about moving over early, but often I've been flashed when I'm will into the section with the short dashed lines between lanes 2 & 3 by which time you should be in your correct lane and not looking to move over. It's quite bizarre.

I realise I'm not breaking any land speed records but 60-65 mph is a perfectly acceptable m/way speed for someone who's in no particular rush, especially if you're in the inside lane, which lane 3 technically is if you're heading into town.

Take the old A40 if you're in no particular rush you could even have pint at the Royal Standard or one of the several pubs in Denham village. There you are sorted that one for you! Next...
But if I stop in Denham Village I might bump into Cilla, and according to the celebrity thread running in the lounge, that's to be avoided!

Why do people drive a car on motorways at less than 68mph?

In my case it's because I'm in absolutely no hurry and the difference in mpg between 60 and 70+ is pretty significant. Why should I spend money just tp please someone else. If me doing 60 holds you up, leave earlier!

1. Are you moving over when the overhead signs say so, or when the white paint markings on the road say so?

2. Are the people flashing you, drivers who are not familiar with the junction layout?

3. Are they Northerners?
1. A mixture. I start to keep an eye out for a suitable gap when the signs appear, but don't cross over straight away. But I like to be in lane 3 shortly before the road markings tell me I must be in lane 3.

2. They have to choose themselves between M25 & M40. So they must know it's 1&2 for M25 and 3&4 for M40.

3. Difficult to tell when I'm lip reading "fking get over you tt" what their accent is.

So you sit at 60mph in Lane 3 of a 4 lane carriageway for a mile and wonder whats wrong with that?
Tell me what's wrong with it under the circumstances I've described. No one else seems to think I'm doing much wrong.

Share your expertise.

If someone wants to drive at 40 on the m/way, and they are in the correct lane, then it wouldn't bother me. I certainly wouldn't be flashing them. Live and let live.
