After much deliberation it looks like I will be selling my Mazda 6 MPS. It isn't quite floating my boat.

I am likely to go back to an E39 M5, but I am wondering what else for £10k is out there that will entertain me? The M5 is on the cards as a standard one (without back box delete) should be quiet enough in the cabin for my hearing condition. Any other offers?

I dont need 4 doors, I just prefer 4 doors generally.

I dont really like the 6 series (the current one is better looking). If I go back to BMW then it has to be an M really.

I think the Monaro would be too loud for my ears sadly.

The E55k has already been vetoed by the gf lol

I think I'm not old enough yet for a jag...

I've heard too many horror stories about the C5 RS6 that I am very put off it

Thanks guys.

It's a bit of a myth regarding the turbos, K04s tend to last fairly well and my car is on its originals at 150k. Sadly, RS4s do seem to go through electrical items like coil packs, EGT sensors, lambda sensors and MAFs with great regularity. I had an E39 M5 at the same time as my RS4 and would generally drive the M5 given the opportunity. I convinced myself I needed an estate though, something I now regret a bit.
Hmmm, I guess its always the case, you hear more stories of things going wrong than you do of things working.

The K04's on the Mazda MPS range are pretty poor lol.

Interesting that you preferred the M5 over the RS4..

My car's only running 415 BHP and you can push the standard K04s to 500 BHP with the right supporting mods, at which point they probably fail more regularly. From what I've read, K03s on the S4 appear to fail quite frequently. As for preferring the M5, the RS4 wallows quite a bit, though I've got a thicker rear ARB with uprated mounts to go on, which apparently helps substantially. Much of it is that I miss RWD and an NA V8. smile One thing that is better about the RS4 is the modification world, should you like doing such things. Having said that, the ESS supercharger kit for the E39 M5 is quite cheap....
I bet it still picks up nice though at 415bhp!

Yeah I think all of the VAG cars with K04's have the better ones over the ones fitted to the MPS. I know what you mean about RWD NA V8! Its what I miss.

The ESS Supercharger is a good option, though it isnt intercooled so it'd develop heat soak quickly, though for $5000 plus customs, it is still pretty good value.

Agreed, I've seen some interesting dyno charts with repeated runs on the non-intercooled ESS setup.
The problem with it is that you cannot supercharge it afterwards either, it is positioned wrong for it.

If my MPS sells on Thursday then it looks like I'll be starting the hunt for an E39 M5 after June 25th!

What about an Alpina B10 4.6 V8 rare normally well looked after & in budget.

Or just in budget a C55 AMG I know you've discounted the E55 but this is a good alternative.

If you don't mind two doors.

Just thought I'd give you a few more before you go M5 hunting wink
Those are some good calls. I aren't a fan of the alpina, it has the wrong gearbox for me. Same with the Merc's, though I do like a supercharged Merc! Trouble is the mrs really doesn't lol

Something a bit left-field, vary rare and well within budget too - VW Passat W8:

Very left field. They do nothing for me sadly though the W8 engine is interesting. I knew someone who had one and it sounded good but never looked that fast.

Is the M5 going to be your only car?

I've been in this situation.

Bought an S55 AMG, absolutely mental car (55 kompressor engine)

Had a modified B5 S4.

Decided i wanted to daily a V8 so bought a D2 S8 for pennies, LPG'd it - backbox delete - havent looked back...
Yes it will be. I like the S8 but i think id go for the V10 because V10 lol. But i know they're slower midrange than an E39. It'll be my second M5 and hopefully it'll be one I keep for a while to come

Id love a D3 S8, just too much for me at the moment. I had a 4.2 tdi D3 sport and that was lovely.

Ahh its one of those old chesnuts, the "sold the car shouldnt have sold the car want it back" scenario. I sometimes get like that with my old cummins ram - then i realise how much of a dog it was!! Good fun though!

I must admit ive never been a beemer fan, but i find myself more and more often looking at them. Especially older ones like the E39 M5, alpinas etc

For now though, the S8 will do. Its not massively quick (360bhp) but it has enough grunt to overtake and the build quality is immense. Also the LPG makes dailying a V8 bearable.
They aren't cheap, but they do look pretty decent inside, and V10 lol. Not a patch on the S85 V10 in the M5 imo, but still, a V10 and still sounds awesome! biggrin

I do like beemers, but aside from a few of the older ones, havent really had a desire to own one, other than an M5. 360bhp isnt that much of a slouch mind! They weigh less than an E39 M5, but I think its the auto box that off the mark stops them being quicker than they are (at least on paper).

Arrrrgh! While I know my modded E55 will leave an M5 for dust I still keep looking at these. There used to be one that prowled around near where I used to live a few years back that just got me wanting one.
I've never driven an E55, is yours the kompressor model? I just don't think I could live with an auto again as a fun car otherwise I would consider one, despite what the mrs says!

BMW warranty on that car also with a view to extend. Could come in very handy if rod bearings or VANOS rear their ugly heads. Clean with a great spec list, too. If you give them a call and give a deposit I'm sure they'd hold it until the 25th for you.
Rod bearings aren't a common issue and neither is vanos failure. I don't know where people pick this up from

Audi S6??

Quiet, refined generally not thrashed or as highly strung as the RS6.

Audi S6

Also V10 with more power than M5. Newer and nicer interior etc..

Agree RWD might be more fun though, and this example is slightly over budget.

EDIT: Road tax doesn't fit your criteria either.
Road tax wasnt really an issue, I paid £42 a month when I had my Mazda. I did consider the S6, but its actually slower on the move than an M5.
